Robert Cribb, Narangoa Li:
Imperial Japan and National Identities in Asia, 1895-1945 (NIAS Studies in Asian Topics Series) - hardcover

2003, ISBN: 0700714820

[SR: 3174984], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780700714827], Routledge, Routledge, Book, [PU: Routledge], 2003-05-01, Routledge, Nationalism was a powerful force in Asia during the era of Japanese imperial expansion (1895-1945). Asia's peoples sought freedom from the Western and Chinese empires which dominated the continent, while challenging each other over borders and systems of government. From the earliest Japanese intrusions on the mainland in 1895 until final defeat in 1945, Japanese authorities had to grapple with the national identities of the people they sought to dominate. This book traces Japan's impact on these national identities, from its clumsy intervention in Siberia, through its ambitious attempts to create puppet states in Manchuria and China, to its brief but dramatic foray into Southeast Asia. The book compares the perspective of societies such as India and Tibet, which observed Japan from a distance, with the experience of societies which experienced Japanese intervention at close hand. The authors highlight the contradictions in Japanese policy, which sometimes encouraged other Asian nationalist movements, sometimes suppressed or undermined them, and sometimes sought to create new identities out of little more than romantic imagination. This book provides a valuable resource for students of East Asia., 771718, World History, 12447629031, Civilisation & Culture, 12447630031, Cold War, 278066, Discovery & Exploration, 772016, Maritime History & Piracy, 275899, Revolutions & Coups, 772066, Slavery, 276593, Women in History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271287, Middle East, 271289, Bahrain, 271298, Iran, 271299, Iraq, 271300, Israel, 271301, Jordan, 271291, Kuwait, 271302, Lebanon, 271292, Oman, 271194, Egypt, 271303, Palestine, 271293, Qatar, 271294, Saudi Arabia, 271304, Syria, 271305, Turkey, 271295, United Arab Emirates, 271296, Yemen, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271274, Japan, 271248, Asia, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 275882, International Relations, 275883, Diplomacy, 496624, Geopolitics, 275870, Government & Politics, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 275909, Nationalism, 275901, Political Science & Ideology, 275870, Government & Politics, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 276533, Multicultural Studies, 276534, Black Studies, 496706, Discrimination & Racism, 276538, Indigenous Peoples, 276539, Islamic Studies, 276540, Jewish Studies, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books

Imperial Japan and National Identities in Asia, 1895-1945 - new book

2003, ISBN: 9780700714827

ID: 9780700714827

Imperial Japan and National Identities in Asia, 1895-1945: Hardback: RoutledgeCurzon: 9780700714827: 01 May 2003: The volume includes chapters on the Japanese imperial campaign in India, Tibet, Siberia, Mongolia, Korea, Manchukuo, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. Between 1895 and 1945, Japan was heavily engaged in other parts of Asia, first in neighbouring Korea and northeast Asia, later in southern China and Southeast Asia. During this period Japanese ideas on the nature of national identities in Asia changed dramatically. At first Japan discounted the significance of nationalism, but in time Japanese authorities came to see Asian nationalisms as potential allies, especially if they could be shaped to follow Japanese patterns. At the same time, the ways in which other Asians thought of Japan also changed. Initially many Asians saw Japan as a useful but distant model, but with the rise of Japanese political power, this distant admiration turned into both cooperation and resistance. This volume includes chapters on India, Tibet, Siberia, Mongolia, Korea, Manchukuo, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia.
