Faces From The Past - The Dignity of Maori Age. Kristin Zambucka's portraits of a fast-vanishing generation of Maori women record, in most timely fashion, the beauty and dignity of her subjects. A tattooed Kuia (grandmother) is a symbol of the Maori world. She is like a flag. When a flag unfurls in the breeze it is looked at with admiration, or awe, or sorrow, or gladness or pride. Most often it is regarded with pride - by people who understand what it symbolises and who believe in the symbol. Why is a kuia with tattooed chin held in such high esteem by both Maori and Pakeha alike? Because they are rare now, and difficult to discover. Many of the kuia will be remembered in a simple way as the gentle and kindly grandmothers whom Kristin Zambucka has captured in her portraits. Faces from the Past. The Dignity of Maori Age - hardcover

1971, ISBN: 9780589006662

ID: 827698725

A.H. & A.W.Reed, 1971. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 360 x 280 mm 60 pages 25 plates Edge worn and part faded dust wrapper. In this book the artist set out to record the moko of North Island kuia before this ancient tradition was lost with the passing of that generation. Kristin Zambucka's subjects were all of advanced age when the portraits were painted and by the time the book was published some had already passed on. The dignity of the kuia featured is equally evident in the manner in which the artist depicted them. Many were past the 100 year mark at that time. This work provides a valuable record of the last of the era of the traditional tribal tattoo for women. Each of the 25 plates of kuia has brief personal details of the subject opposite the portrait., Dr S M Mead of Auckland University said in his foreword: "All that is fine in Maori culture is projected upon the tattooed kuia. She is looked at with love and with a tear in the beholder's eye. What she symbolises is already gone and she herself is soon to follow,", A.H. & A.W.Reed, 1971
