AND IN CAMBRIDGE STUDIES THE THEORY OF POLITICS CHRISTIANITY, Political Science|History & Theory, Political Science|Public Policy|Social Policy, Religion|Hinduism, Jacket, 475 pages. Dustjacket. Former owner's name on front free endpaper. Some annotations or underlining in pencil. Slight wear & slight soiling to spine, covers & corners. Dustjacket somewhat worn & somewhat chipped. Religion and Public Doctrine in Modern EnglandThis book is a preliminary to a larger work in which Mr Cowling will discuss the doctrines which have been held about religious, political, moral, aesthetic, scientific, educational and social matters amongst the English intel-ligentsia in the last century and a half. It will constitute an extended answer to the questions, what public doctrines have been predominant in England in this period? to what extent has Christianity been superseded? The present, volume has a loose autobiographical structure which elucidates the development of Mr Cowling’s opinions by describing the thoughts of thinkers to whom he has responded. Each thinker, however, is discussed in his own terms; it is through a fusion between their opinions and the phases in Mr Cowling’s attitude to Christianity that he identifies religion as the central problem in modern English intellectual history. Some of the people discussed are primarily Cambridge thinkers. Others have been major influences on both sides of the Atlantic. The book contains extended, critical accounts of the thought of Toynbee, T.S. Eliot, Colling- wood, Butterfield, Oakeshott, David Knowles, Evelyn Waugh and Churchill. It also contains less extended accounts of the thought of A.N. Whitehead, of Enoch Powell and of Lord Salisbury, the Victorian Prime Minister, when he was a young journalist.Though Mr Cowling recognises that Christianity has in certain respects to be understood as a matter of personal internal belief, his primary concern is with Christianity’s rôle as a public doctrine. The effect of this volume is to establish the centrality of this conception to the properly historical treatment which the second volume will give to its ramifications in all aspects of English life and thought be-tween 1840 and 1980.Maurice Cowling was born in London in 1926. He was educated at Battersea Grammar School and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he read history. He did military service between 1944 and 1948 in the British and Indian armies. He was a Fellow of Jesus College from 1950 to 1953 and, after a period in London, returned to Jesus as a Fellow in 1961. Since 1963 he has been a Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge, and is Reader in Modern English History in the University. His earlier works include The Nature and Limits of Political Science, 1963; Mill and Liberalism,Mr Cowling was a Conservative parliamentary candidate at the general election of 1959, a member of the Cambridgeshire and Isle of Ely County Council from 1966 to 1970, and Literary Editor of the Spectator in 1970 and 1971. In 1978 he edited Conservative Essays. Size: Octavo (standard book size). Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilogram. Religion and Public Doctrine in Modern England: Volume 1 - hardcover

ISBN: 9780521232890

[ED: Hardcover], [PU: CAMBRIDGE UNIV PR], In Religion and Public Doctrine in Modern England, Maurice Cowling defines the principles according to which the intellectual history of modern England should be written and argue that the history of Christianity is of primary importance. In this volume, which is self-contained, he makes a further contribution to understanding the role which Christianity has played in modern English thought. There are critical accounts of the thought of Toynbee, T. S. Eliot, Collingwood, Butterfield, Oakeshott, David Knowles, Evelyn Waugh and Churchill. It also contains less extended accounts of the thought of A. N. Whitehead, of Enoch Powell Minister. The book is given coherence by the connected ideas of the ubiquity of religion, of literature as an instrument of religious indoctrination, and of the intimacy of the connections between the political, philosophical, literary and religious assumptions that are to be found among the leaders of the English intelligentsia.
