Man can not see the spirit of his brother man - its intelligence, passion, energy; but he can see the changing features of the face and gestures of the body; the rest, by consciousness and experience, is interpretation. Man can not see God - his power and wisdom and grace; but he can perceive the phenomena of nature, of conscious ness. Of history, through which He manifests himself whose goings-forth are from everlasting; the rest, by faith, con science, reason, reverence, and love, is interpretation. Truth, for us, is the conformity of our conceptions with the facts of existence. The facts are prior to us and inde pendent Of us. We can not essentially change them, nor mold them to our notions and will. We must take them as we find them, and apprehend them as they are, if we wish to gain a knowledge of their qualities and the use of their energies. This is but another way of saying again that man is an interpreter, not a creator, and that all knowledge is interpretation.
