ISBN: 9780415082716

[ED: Taschenbuch], [PU: ROUTLEDGE CHAPMAN HALL], Table of contents: I The Elite: Concept and Ideology, II From the Ruling Class to the Power Elite, III Politics and the Circulation of Elites, IV Intellectuals, Managers and Bureaucrats, V Tradition and Modernity: Elites in the Developing Countries, VI Democracy and the Plurality of Elites, VII Equality or Elites?, VIII Into the Millenium, Bibliography, Index. In this substantially revised and enlarged second edition of a classic text that has been used throughout the world in numerous translations, Tom Bottomore reconsiders Ãlite theory in the light of more recent studies. He examines the role and significance of Ãlites in relation to classes and class structure in both advanced industrial and developing countries, and expounds the criticism of Ãlites and Ãlitism that have been formulated by democratic and socialist thinkers and movements. In a new concluding chapter, Professor Bottomore considers the prospect, as humanity approaches the millenium, for a renewed advance towards more egalitarian forms of society, in which all citizens would be able to participate more fully and effectively in the shaping of their social world. Tom Bottomore taught at the London School of Economics 1952-64, was Head of the Department of Political Science, Sociology and Anthropology at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver 1965-67, and Professor of Sociology at the University of Sussex 1968-85 where he is now Professor Emeritus. He is the author of numerous books, most recently: Theories of Modern Capitalism, Allen and Unwin (1985) Classes in Modern Society, Routledge (2nd edition, 1991) and Between Marginalism and Marxism: The Economic Sociology of J A Schumpter, Harvester Wheatsheaf (1992). In this substantially revised second edition of a classic text, Tom Bottomore reconsiders Ãlite theory in the light of recent studies. He examines its role in relation to class structures, and considers the prospects for a more equal society. 152 pages - 198 x 129 mm Versandfertig in 2-4 Wochen, DE, [SC: 0.00], Neuware, gewerbliches Angebot, offene Rechnung (Vorkasse vorbehalten)

Details of the book
Elites and Society

In this fully revised classic text, Tom Bottomore poses fundamental questions about the theory and ideology of elites. While a number of theorists have studied the "power elite," the Marxist notion of a ruling class, many more have followed the theories of Pareto and Mosca, who use the term "elite" to critique Marxism, the very philosophy from which this concept first originated. Their theories thus exemplify the complexities and slipperiness particular to this sociological term. In his usual clear and accessible style, Bottomore looks at the principal theories of elites from Mosca and Pareto to those of present day theorists, and examines the characteristics of particular elites in relation to the upper classes and class structures in other industrially advanced societies and developing countries. He concludes by examining the prospects for more egalitarian forms of society as humanity approaches the new millennium in which democracy is increasingly the ideology of choice.
