[EAN: 9780356191942], [PU: Macdonald], Hardback. Villain or victim? The real story behind one of Hollywood's most notorious tragedies. He was the hot new favourite of the silver screen - he was called 'The Balloonatic', 'The Prince of Whales'. In 1921 Roscoe 'Fatty' Arbuckle was the highest-paid film comedian of his day. He had 3 films in the can, was happily married, and at the peak of his succes. Then, on September 5, he threw a lavish 'open house' party to celebrate his new $3,000,000 Paramount contract. It was a party that got wildly out of hand, and ended abruptly when a starlet named Virginia Rappe let out a terrifying scream. What happened next has touched off nearly 70yrs. of speculation: some claiming Fatty assaulted Virginia Rappe with a champagne bottle, others maintaining he was nowhere near her when she screamed. In any case, Rappe died 5 days after the incident, and Arbuckle was charged with first-degree murder - and railroaded through 3 trials before finally being acquitted. By this time his million-dollar career was devastated, his life in ruins. What was the truth? Recreating the glittering Hollywood of the 1920s, the author draws on completely new, hitherto unrevealed evidence to determine what really happened behind the scenes. Why, for example, did the key witness lie and then escape perjury charges? What sinister role was played by Paramount chief Adolph Zukor? And could Fatty Arbuckle have been the innocent victim of a frame-up? Based on evidence from the Paramount archives, on personal interviews with Arbuckle's first wife and with Paramount staff, and on Arbuckle's previously unpublished account of what happened at that fateful party, this truly fascinating investigative work at last tells the real and tragic story. Illus. + Filmography compiled by Smauel A. Gill. 319pp. 8vo. h/back. From the library of true crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. Nr. F. in nr. f. dw.
