Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 22nd, 23rd & 24th November, 1972. Blue printed wrappers, small 4to,. 159 pp, + 2 plates. 985 lots. From the catalogue introduction: "This part of the library of Christ's College, formerly the Free Church College, is basically the result of two nineteenth century benefactions. Many of the books bear the engraved bookplate of Alexander Thomson of Banchory, and many the label of the Lindsay-Brown Library, often with the ownership inscription 'Jo: Brown' on the titlepage. Alexander Thomson (1795-1868), was intimately connected with Aberdeen; the son of Andrew Thomson, his maternal grandfather was Professor of Mathematics at Marischal College, and he himself was educated there, before proceeding to study law in Edinburgh. Except for some periods of travel, he lived all his life at Banchory; always an avid reader, he bought books while on his travels in Europe, and in his diary described his visits to libraries. [When] speaking of the codex of the Pandects in Florence, he says 'printed at Florence 1553, 3 vols. Folio. I have a very good copy of this edition (lot 502)'. Very interested in social questions, he served on the Prison Board of Aberdeen from 1840-62, he published Punishment and Prevention, 1857, and Social Evils; their causes and their cure, 1852 [for the MSS. Of these works see lots 918A and 919]. He also published several papers on antiquarian subjects and bequeathed his museum with his library to the College. He was a keen participator in the scientific activity of his age, though not always approving, and in 1859, when the British Association met at Aberdeen, he organized the meeting and entertained the Prince Consort, with whom he was on friendly terms, at Banchory [see lots 13 and 832]. ..The Lindsay-Brown bequest seems to have been built up largely by John Brown, whose ownership inscription and bibliographical notes appear in many volumes."Highlights included: Incunabula, including Bartholomaeus Anglicus, Dc Proprietatibus Rerum, [ Cologne c. 1472]: Boccaccio, Genealogia Deorum, Reggio-Emilia, 1481; Illustrium Virorum Epistolae, Lyon, 1499; Savonarola, Tractato circa el Reggimento & gouerno della Firenze, [Florence c. 1498] and four other incunabula in one vol.; Schedel, Liber Chronicorum [ The Nuremberg Chronicle], Nuremberg, 1493; William of Ockham, Scriptum in Primum Librum Sentenciarum, [ Urach]1483. English, Scottish and Continental Literature and History of the Sixteenth to the Nineteenth century, including Aepinus, Liber de Purgatorio, [London, 1549]; the first edition of the Douai Bible in English, 1609-10; Walton's Polyglot Bible, 'Republican' Issue, 6 vol., 1655-57; Boyle, Experimenta & observationes physicae, 1691; Camden's Britannia, 1695; Crashaw, Epigrammatum sacrorum liber, 1634; Erasmus, Opera omnia, 10 Vol.,1703-06; Graevius, Gronovius, Sallangre and Polenus, Thesaurus Antiquitatum, 33 Vol., Venice, 1732-37; Harris, Compleat Collection of Voyages, 1764; Tractatus de Virtutibus Herbarum, Venice, 1520; Locke, Essay Concerning Humane Understanding, First Issue, 1690; Mather, Ecclesiastical History of New England, 1702; Rae, Narrative of an Expedition to the Arctic Sea, 1850; Rymer and Holmes, Foedera, 20 Vol., 1727-35; Adam Smith, Essays on Philosophical Subjects, 1795; Weinmann, Phytanthoza Iconographia . . . Pencil notes to title-page, most lots lightly struck through in pencil, otherwise Good., Sotheby & Co., London, auction catalogue for the sale held on 22nd, 23rd & 24th November, 1972, 1972, [no date], 1st edition, 1st printing. (Mass market paperback) 52pp. Fine. Undated (c.1955). 3.5" X 8.5". Yellow printed card wrappers, stapled. Foreword by Alberta Premier Ernest Manning. This report is from the National Research Council's Committee to Study the National Needs for Biomedical, Behavioral, and Clinical Research Personnel and identifies key issues in the workforce needs of those in basic biomedical sciences, behavioral and social sciences research, clinical sciences research, oral health, nursing research, and health services research. These include the job situation for postdoctorates completing their training, questions about the continued supply of international postdoctorates in an increasingly competitive world, the need for equal training for all graduate students who receive National Institutes of Health funding, and the need to increase the diversity of trainees. Cross-cutting issues are addressed, followed by issues in each field. There is no index. (2011 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR), National Academies Press, 2011

[EAN: 9780309159654], Neubuch, [PU: National Academies Press, United States], Brand New Book. Comprehensive research and a highly-trained workforce are essential for the improvement of health and health care both nationally and internationally. During the past 40 years the National Research Services Award (NRSA) Program has played a large role in training the workforce responsible for dramatic advances in the understanding of various diseases and new insights that have led to more effective and targeted therapies. In spite of this program, the difficulty obtaining jobs after the postdoc period has discouraged many domestic students from pursuing graduate postdoc training. In the United States, more than 50 percent of the postdoc workforce is made up of individuals who obtained their Ph.D.s from other countries. Indeed, one can make a strong argument that the influx of highly trained and creative foreigners has contributed greatly to U.S. science over the past 70 years.Research Training in the Biomedical, Behavioral, and Clinical Research Sciences discusses a number of important issues, including: the job prospects for postdocs completing their training; questions about the continued supply of international postdocs in an increasingly competitive world; the need for equal, excellent training for all graduate students who receive NIH funding; and the need to increase the diversity of trainees. The book recommends improvements in minority recruiting, more rigorous and extensive training in the responsible conduct of research and ethics, increased emphasis on career development, more attention to outcomes, and the requirement for incorporating more quantitative thinking in the biomedical curriculum.
