Knights and Their World - hardcover

1975, ISBN: 9780304294428

ID: 952694829

Cassell & Co. Very Good/Very Good. 1975. Hard Cover. 25.2 x 17.6 x 2.8 cm 030429442X Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. Numerous colour and b/w illustrations. 240 pages clean and tight. The armoured knight on horseback, his shield ablaze with the heraldic arms of his line, his lance and flashing broadsword is the best-known, most spectacular and-for most people-the most typical and romantic figure of the Middle Ages. Without knights and the code of behaviour and ideals attached to them and known as `chivalry', medieval European civilisation as we know it would not have existed. The knight dominated the theory and practice of warfare until the arrival of the English longbow and, later, gunpowder. He inspired some of the great masterpieces of European literature and eventually became one of the world's great legendary figures. He gave European nobility its heraldry, he inspired much of the pageantry and traditional splendour we associate with the Middle Ages and in his time he gave a new dimension to Christianity. He represented a whole way of life and an ideal of human behaviour in a warlike society. Even though many knights (if not the majority) failed to live up to the high ideals of chivalry which knighthood inspired, they created the popular image of the gallant gentleman-adventurer on horseback. With its twenty-four pages of colour illustrations and over a hundred others in monochrome, this book gives a clear, lively and thoroughly documented account of the origins and development of this astonishing brotherhood of arms, from the time of the first mailed warriors on horseback in the Dark Ages to the Hundred Years War when knightly pageantry reached its peak and fell beneath the arrow storm of the English yeomen, never to rise again. A wealth of colourful examples and striking details shows the reader what the knights were, what they achieved and what the world of chivalry they created meant for them at the time of its greatest glory. ., Cassell & Co, 1975
