First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Nigel Lewis. ?Paperchase is the true story of a state secret and its revelation. Its roots are in the Second World War; its setting is the Cold War and the period of detente; its landscape is the whole of Europe ? central Europe in particular ? Russia, and the United States; its time-span is more than thirty years, from 1946 to the present. It was in 1946 that a mysterious convoy called at the monastery of Grussau. It drove away loaded with crates of manuscripts that had been stored there during the war. These were not scraps of merely antiquarian interest, but, in the words of one who later searched for them, the kind of treasures that made it 'the duty of scholars to be treasure hunters'. The manuscripts could be numbered in thousands, but chief among them was the music, more than two hundred original autograph scores by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and other great composers. The crates held a quarter of all Mozart's known music ? including The Magic Flute as well as many other major works. The jewel of the rich Beethoven tally was the Ninth Symphony. The story of the search for these missing treasures is thriller, detective story, and history in one. It involves the monks of Griissau, scholars, librarians, politicians, an American music lover called Carleton Smith, and an Englishman in search of a Brazilian fish. The mystery of the manuscripts is solved, gradually at first in the stories of the Benedictine Rescue and the Leningrad Cantata, then in the unravelling of an `unexpected death' in the late 1960s, finally in the dramatic revelations of the 1970s. This is a unique and hitherto untold war story. As President Truman put it, 'Everyone's worried about the missing paintings, but no one seems to know about the manuscripts.' For years the story bubbled under, `a thriller in instalments', according to the Paris magazine Le Point, 'with prelude, suspense, fugue, dangers, uncertainties, and final harmony'. Now the story is fully broken for the first time.? Book - in Very God blue boards with gilt lettering - light bumping to the extreme corners and extreme ends of the spine. Contents, light speckling to the rear paste down and rear free end paper otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Good - light creasing to the extreme top edges and the red background colouring to the spine has sunned and light spotting to the rear flap. " Size: 8.75 inches tall by 5.5 inches.
