John Crook:

The Architectural Setting of the Cult of Saints in the Early Christian West C.300-1200 (Oxford Historical Monographs) - hardcover

ISBN: 0198207948

[SR: 2551214], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780198207948], OUP Oxford, OUP Oxford, Book, [PU: OUP Oxford], OUP Oxford, This book explores the way in which church architecture from the earliest centuries of Christianity has been shaped by holy bones - the physical remains or 'relics' of those whom the Church venerated as saints. The Church's holy dead continued to exercise an influence on the living from beyond the grave, and their earthly remains provided a focus for prayer. The memoriae, house-churches and crypts of early Christian Rome; the elaborately decorated monuments containing the bodies of the bishops of Merovingian Gaul; the revival of ring crypts in the Carshingian empire; the crypts, 'tomb-shrines', and later high shrines of medieval England, all demonstrate how the presence of a holy body within a church influenced its very architecture. This is the first complete modern study of this hitherto somewhat neglected aspect of medieval church architecture in western Europe., 266302, Religious Buildings, 512758, Types of Architecture, 266240, Architecture, 91, Art, Architecture & Photography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271343, Britain & Ireland, 772060, British Heads of State, 271353, Early British & Roman Britain, 271352, Anglo-Saxon 500-1000, 271344, Norman and Medieval 1001-1500, 271345, Early Modern 1501-1700 (Tudors, Stuarts, Commonwealth, Restoration, Glorious Revolution), 271346, Queen Anne, Georgian, Victorian 1701-1901, 771730, Edwardian and Early 20th Century 1901-1913, 271350, World War I 1914-1918, 771732, Inter-war Period 1919-1938, 271349, Post-war Period, 1946-Present, 771734, The Norman Conquest, 771744, Black Death, 771738, Wars of the Roses, 771742, Reformation in Britain, 771740, English Civil War, 771746, Industrial Revolution, 772174, Peninsular War, 772170, Boer Wars, 772172, Crimean War, 771748, Falklands War, 771774, Gulf War, 4117771, Ireland, 4117751, Scotland, 4117761, Wales, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 772028, Christianity, 771714, Religious History, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 275605, Antiquities, 275604, Mythology, 61, Mind, Body & Spirit, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 277274, Saints, 277267, Catholic, 277266, Christianity, 58, Religion & Spirituality, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
