When fossils are mentioned we often think of dinosaurs, shaggy mammoths, or petrified logs from ancient trees. Actually, these are only a few of the things that lived and died during the "prehistoric" past. Their remains and traces, now found in rocks, record life's story through i,600 to 2,700 million years. This book presents highlights of that story. Dr. Fenton explains what fossils arc, how they are found, what they reveal, and how they divide the Earth's history into an orderly series of ages. Four chapters survey life in early seas, beginning with creatures too simple to rank as plants and ending with "lilies" that were animals. Then comes the perilous move from fresh water to land, and the long succession of amphibians, reptiles, and birds, and the warm-blooded mammals that prospered after dinosaurs died out. The tale of mankind begins, not with men, but with apes and man-apes of Ice-Age Africa. Then came "ape-men" who really were human, though their discoverer dismissed them as oversized gibbons. Through Neanderthalers - once called idiots - the story leads on to men of our own species who killed mammoths and painted world-famous pictures as the Ice Age came to an end. The book closes with a survey of fossils to be seen in museums, a glossary, and a list of books for adults and young readers who want still more information.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Illus. by 200 drawings and photographs .. 8vo., The World's Work, 1967, Stroud, UK: Sutton, 1997. Binding is black cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Dj price-clipped; now protected inside a cover. The story of the Claudian Conquest of Britain was only partly recorded by ancient historians. Tacitus' Annals breaks off at the death of Tiberius, while the narrative of Cassius Dio survives only as a collection of selected pieces. Much of this missing knowledge has been recaptured by archaeological research. As a result, we have a better understanding of the tribal society which then existed in Britain, and this can help us to appreciate the courses of military action open to Aulus Plautius, the commanding Roman general. There are important, if infrequently considered, military factors which would have affected Plautius' choice of options: logistical, geographical, political. In this innovative and much acclaimed study John Peddie argues that the organisation and supply problems of a task force of some 40,000 men and several thousand animals would broadly have dictated Roman tactics. He discusses what these may have been, examines the reasons for Vespasian's seemingly isolated foray into the West Country, and suggests that Caratacus' guerilla campaign (AD 43-52) denied the Romans their hope of a speedy conquest.. Book Description: The fourth in a new series of four books: the first and second titles were published in August and October 2009, the third to be published in February 2010. Fantastically atmospheric evocations of Egyptian life are encased in an exciting adventure story. Each story features the boy and girl characters Hopi and Isis, and their struggles for existence and adventure in Egypt circa 1150 BC. In this story, The Deathstalker, Isis and Hopi try to help a Libyan girl who has been taken prisoner. The author has spent much time in Egypt and the stories are meticulously researched. The book includes factual detail and notes about Egyptian lifestyle, the importance of the gods for the Egyptians, the tombs and much else. : Review: Praise for the Egyptian Chronicles series: 'Stories set in ancient Egypt are rare so this is very welcome. Details of life at the time, the food, drink, clothing and customs come alive as part of the story, not indigestible facts' Books for Keeps 'Life in Ancient Egypt is described in convincingly authentic detail as the thrilling plot unravels ... Background detail is abundant and colourful, providing much information about life in Ancient Egypt in a very natural way ... A highly readable volume with a rich educational bonus' School Librarian 'As well as an exciting storyline, the books are also historically accurate, allowing children to absorb information while they read' Junior Education Plus 'The Ancient Egypt of 1150 BC is vividly recreated here in all its heat, colour, beauty and menace ... a memorable read' Carousel : About the Author: Gill Harvey studied French and Philosophy at Oxford, and has been puzzling over life ever since. After experimenting with a number of careers, she eventually got a job as a writer/editor at Usborne Publishing in 1994. Five years later, having reached the position of Senior Editor and having completed an MA in Modern Literature, Gill decided to go freelance. Since then, writing has become a way of life. Her love of horses has resulted in eight of the Heartland titles for Scholastic Inc under the name of Lauren Brooke; she has also written a couple of Hodder Headline's Young Animal Ark series as Lucy Daniels. A year spent commuting to Egypt led to the writing of Orphan of the Sun, Gill's first book for Bloomsbury, and subsequently to the Egyptian Chronicles series. Size: 12.9 x 1.2 x 19.8 cm. 176 pages.
