He eventually ran their Oriental Warehouse. By 1875 he was able to open his own store on Regent Street. Text assisted by b/w drawings and photographs PLUS a section of colour photographs at the back. Lettering is white. Very light wear at some corners and edges. No names, marks, creases, nor tears. Binding tight, colours bright, spine fine. Minimal soiling. Almost giftable. Quote (p. 52) : " ._._. visualised the Costume Department as an educational, almost missionary project, the aim being 'to establish the craft of dressmaking upon some hygienic, intelligible and progressive basis to initiate a renaissance that should commend itself artistically to ._._._.' ."

Profusely illustrated with colour and black and white photos showing Hamada's work, his studio, and the step by step process of producing pottery. Tight binding, square uncreased spine. Laminated covers show minor corner creases, a stress line to upper front cover, a little delamination at fore edge. Contents clean save for former owner's name /date on half-title page, small paint smear to margin of plate 7 and fore edge of book. Shoji Hamada (1894-1978), along with Bernard Leach, was one of the key figures in Japan's folkcraft movement and "...in the development of studio pottery in the 20th century. His influence both in England and the US as well as in his native Japan cannot be underestimated.
