[This book] is by far the largest publication of Karsh; nearly 200 images record the 'faces of our time,' from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan to Pope John Paul II; from H.G. Wells to Graham Greene; from Augustus John to Andy Warhol; from the young Bette Davis to Sophia Loren in splindid maturity. The photographer contributes a substantial autobiographical section with personal photographs.' In An American Lens, Jay Bochner looks at a series of milestones in thedevelopment of the American avant-garde that capture a pivotal period in artisticconsciousness. He focuses on the multiple roles of Alfred Stieglitz -- asinfluential gallery owner, photographer, and impresario of the emerging art scene --at a series of significant moments in his career. These close-ups offer a moreintense and expanded understanding of the subject than the familiar longview.Bochner uses these scenes to recreate for today's readers the birth ofmodernism in America--what it was like to be an audience for the art of the earlyavant-garde. Moving from frame to frame, he shows us, for example, a singlephotograph by Stieglitz of a snowy night in 1893 and a short description by StephenCrane of just such a snowfall; the preparation, the reception, and the aftermath ofthe famous Armory Show of modern art in 1913; Gertrude Stein's portraits in prose;New York at the dawn of Dada, with Paul Strand, Francis Picabia, and others; and theintersecting paths of Mina Loy, William Carlos Williams, and Marcel Duchamp in 1917.Bochner also examines Stieglitz's three great photographic series: his photographsof Georgia O'Keeffe, of clouds, and of skyscrapers. These sections of the bookinclude many Stieglitz photos, including some rarely seen portraits ofO'Keeffe.Stieglitz as impresario and artist achieved an almost mythical status, which some recent critics have worked to deflate -- casting him, for example, asSvengali to Georgia O'Keeffe's spellbound Trilby. Engaging in neither idolatry nordemolition, Bochner looks instead for the truth about the man and the myth. Thescenes from American art in An American Lens create a new version of Stieglitz'sbiography, allowing us to reread his life and the life of his times by focusingintently on what is visible and not so visible in the art he left behind. A close reading of photography yields a groundbreaking cultural biography; reveals photography's impresario, Alfred Stieglitz, as he has never been revealed before and looks at his photographs as they have never been looked at before. In A Star for Noon he turns his gifts to the universally appealing subject of love. This gorgeous book combines exquisite female nudes with still lifes, poetry, and original music. The female nudes are both sensuous and reverential; the rich colors are complemented by still lifes of flowers and mysterious abstracts. Much of this work has never been published before, for Parks, at eighty-seven, continues to be a vital and active artist. The eighteen previously unpublished poems gently but ardently trace the arc of love from infatuation through loss and, finally, fulfillment. A Star for Noon engages multiple sense as the reader, not transfixed by the rich images and poetry alone, is also enveloped by the passionate music - specially composed and performed by Parks on piano with a small orchestra here uniquely included on CD and packaged with this volume. This exceptional CD is the only music by Gordon Parks available on the market. The publication of this book coincides with the airing of a major HBO documentary on Parks's life and work. Gordon Parks is a beloved figure in the history of the arts in our century, and the stories of his struggles against racism and in the pursuit of beauty have inspired generations.., Bulfinch Pr, 2000, Aperture, April 2008. Cover art shows a smiling Mickey wearing the Triple Crown he won in 1956, with his Yankee No. 7 in the background and images of him swinging right-and lefthanded appearing over his shoulders. A special tribute to Mickey Mantle in the First of the Vintage Beckett Sports Heroes series. Mickey Mantle was unique among athletes for the passion he stirred, and elicits still, more than a quarter-century after his retirement. The reaction among fans to news of Mickey's liver cancer and subsequent surgery was testimony to his continued grip on the public. Such emotions are the sincerest forms of tribute because they are not based on records broken or championships won, but a deeper, almost mystical bond with the public. "When Uelsmann began his career in the late 1950s, fine-art photography was dominated by the documentary tradition of Walker Evans and the purist aesthetic of Edward Weston, Ansel Adams, and the West Coast School. Today, the photomontage - the composite image generated in the darkroom by multiple printing technqiues that employ several negatives - has become an accepted art form, and Uelsmann is the modern master of it. This collection of the best of his images created over the past 35 years documents his seminal contribution to 20th century art. Uelsmann's technique of merging disparate images produces seamless, surreal compositions as emotionally and psychologically allusive as they are technically flawless." Megawords is the brainchild of Port Richmond's Anthony Smyrski and his friend and fellow artist, Dan Murphy, who specialize in creating public spaces that bring artistic projects to life. Engaging people who normally might not visit the museum seems to be a common theme throughout this exhibit. For starters, there is an accompanying billboard campaign that showcases 54 of Strauss' photographs - each on its own billboard - that now can be found throughout Greater Philadelphia. Highlighting multiple influences within a single project is exactly what Megawords does, so it was a no-brainer for Strauss to bring Smyrski and Murphy into the fold for this. - from starnewsphillly.com Includes a schedule of Megawords events through April 2015. The first and only edition. There is no ISBN. The Limited Edition is now rare. Presents Suky Best's "Photo Love: Volume One". There is no Volume Two because it was never intended to be produced. Suky Best is simply and beautifully mimicking the comic-book romance format, manufactured endlessly in multiple volumes, so popular among young people. Her "Photo Love" is about a handsome, young married man who meets the sultry and irresistible Suky and falls in love with her to the tune of Hal David's and Burt Bacharach's "24 Hours From Tulsa". Don't laugh: Developing a storyline on the basis of a song is yet another narrative trope of pop culture. Countless Hollywood movies have been made, and continue to be made, on the premise. They decide to elope to Las Vegas, and we all know how those Vegas weddings quickly end 24 hours later, Britney Spears style. To be continued...Her little pamphlet of a book is very ingeniously and originally presented as though it were just another comic-book romance novellette, rendered in evocatively beautiful photographs (instead of cartoons). A tender, witty beauty whose graphic design values are meticulous and exemplary. An absolute "must-have" title for Suky Best, graphic design, and contemporary art photography collectors. <b><i> This copy is one of the Limited Edition of 500 copies, and it is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Suky Best. The exhibitions show the range of Edmund Teske's work as a peerless artist/photographer/visionary. Presents "Edmund Teske: Chicago And Remembrances". A triumphant achievement. Teske's architectural photography was magisterial in a straightforward and realistic way. A lifelong disciple of Walt Whitman and later a convert of Vedanta, his art evolved into a much more personal and inward-looking vein, which has been characterized as "Romantic". The Bauhaus influence (Teske taught at the Bauhaus School of Chicago) led him to various experiments using techniques such as solarization, superimposition, multiple exposures, composite printing, and duotoning, all with breathtaking results. Yet ultimately, it is Teske's mystical vision in all its poetic beauty that will move the viewer of these photographs, which are some of the most beautiful ever made by an artist. Teske's work evolved dramatically and demands to be seen in its entirety, now possible through the Permanent Collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum, which owns the single largest public collection of his work. An absolute "must-have" title for Edmund Teske collectors. <B><i> This title is now collectible. Anthony van Dyck, knighted by King Charles I of England, was a masterly artist, who learned well from his master, Peter Paul Reubens, at his studio in Antwerp. He painted many works, both protraits and more epic pictures, but it was as the court painter to Charles I that he really gained his claim to fame. He has brought that court and time to life in a way rarely seen under the hand of one artist [he follows in the footsteps of Hans Holbein the Younger at the court of Henry VIII]. Softcover. Brand new book. Snapshots of Sooner State history from the Civil War to the present. Oklahoma historian Angie Debo once observed that all the forces of United States history have come to bear in the development of the Sooner State. This collection of essays provides a series of snapshots reflecting both the singularity of the Oklahoma experience and the state's connections to America's broader history. Spanning the Civil War era and the present, this book develops historic themes as varied as the causes of Indian land dispossession, the Statehood Day wedding ceremony, the oil industry's environmental impact, the Tulsa Race Riot, labor relations during the New Deal, the failure of the Equal Rights Amendment, the state's unique Native artistic traditions, and its musical landscape. Oklahomans have always represented multiple races and cultures, lived in big cities or small towns or on farms, and promoted prosperity and cultural achievement while battling poverty and ignorance. The American Main Street has been the site not only of the best principles of community spirit and traditional values but also of shocking cases of prejudice and violence. Rather than shrinking from difficult subjects, Main Street Oklahoma describes the state's abundant human, natural, and cultural resources, paying tribute to the true grit of Oklahomans, but also exploring some of the more troubling moments in Oklahoma's past. The editors and contributors provide engaging perspectives on the state's rich and diverse history. Linda Williams Reese, a freelance writer and historian, received the Ph.D. in history from the University of Oklahoma. She has taught U.S. and western women's history at the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma history at East Central University in Ada. Women of Oklahoma, 1890-1920, is her first book. Patricia Loughlin is Professor of History at the University of Central Oklahoma and the author of Hidden Treasures of the American West: Muriel H. Wright, Angie Debo, and Alice Marriott, named the Outstanding Book on Oklahoma History by the Oklahoma Historical Society. "Professors Linda Reese and Patricia Loughlin do Oklahomans a great service by presenting twelve remarkable essays that offer stimulating interpretations. . . . a great read for anyone who wants to know more about the state's history, especially during the twentieth century."ÑW. David Baird, co-author of Oklahoma: A History, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman: 2013, Phaidon Inc Ltd, 1999. First edition. Artist Gillian Wearing uses photography and video to produce a portrait of the complexities of contemporary life. The full transcripts of Wearing's videos are included. The book is part of a series of studies of important artists of the late-20th century. 'At Home with Art' reconsiders the domestic environment as a context for contemporary art by discussing an exhibition of specially commissioned works that will be made available to the general public at affordable prices. It is in our homes that we express our personal tastes, yet as a place for the display of works of art the home has become marginalized in favor of public and institutional spaces. As a challenge to this stererotypical view, nine of Britain's leading sculptors--Angela Bulloch, Tony Cragg, Richard Deacon, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Permindar Kaur, David Mach, Richard Wentworth, and Alison Wilding--have been commissioned to design multiples which will be manufactured and made available in stores throughout England. 'At Home with Art 'documents the project in progress and includes an essay by curator Colin Painter. The texts are supplemented by photographs of the artists' drawings, prototypes, and finished objects. At Home With Art aims to reconsider the domestic environment as a context for contemporary art, challenging the stereotypical view that the home represents everything that contemporary art is not.
