Margaret Yates:
Town and Countryside in Western Berkshire, c.1327-c.1600: Social and Economic Change - new book

2007, ISBN: 9781843833284

ID: 204430308

Society and economy altered radically between the so-called medieval and early modern periods, but because of this traditional split, the changes have seldom been studied across the divide. This new study addresses the large historical questions - what changed, when and why - through a detailed case study of rural western Berkshire and Newbury, integrating the experiences of both town (Newbury was a rising cloth manufacturing centre of the fifteenth and earlier sixteenth centuries, with contact with London and overseas), and countryside. It brings to life individuals such as the well-known clothier John Winchcombe known as ´Jack of Newbury´, and Thomas Fox and Isabella Bullford of Shaw and William Eyston of West Hanney, who amassed the landholdings, farmed the lands, or, in the case of Isabella, managed the mill complex after her husband´s death. These were the people who collectively brought about the changes that can be observed in western Berkshire at the end of the middle ages. The study is soundly based on evidence from contemporary documents. Margaret Yates teaches in the Department of History at the University of Reading.
