Dorothee Heisenberg:
Negotiating Privacy: The European Union, The United States, And Personal Data Protection (IPolitics: Global Challenges in the Information Age) - hardcover

2004, ISBN: 1588263800

[SR: 7993890], Hardcover, [EAN: 9781588263803], Lynne Rienner Pub, Lynne Rienner Pub, Book, [PU: Lynne Rienner Pub], Lynne Rienner Pub, How did the European Union come to be the global leader in setting data privacy standards? And what is the significance of this development? Dorothee Heisenberg traces the origins of the stringent EU privacy laws, the responses of the United States and other governments, and the reactions and concerns of a range of interest groups. Analyzing the negotiation of the original 1995 EU Data Protection Directive, the 2000 Safe Harbor Agreement, and the 2004 Passenger Name Record Agreement, Heisenberg shows that the degree to which business vs. consumer interests were factored into governments' positions was the source not only of U.S.-EU conflicts, but also of their resolution. She finds, too, that public opinion in Europe and the U.S. has been remarkably similar - and thus cannot account for official U.S. reaction to the issues raised by the EU privacy directive. More broadly, Negotiating Privacy sheds important light on both the relationship between the U.S. and the EU and the relationship between domestic issues and the development of international rules., 2598, Money & Monetary Policy, 2581, Economics, 3, Business & Money, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 10817, General, 227137, Constitutional Law, 10777, Law, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11093, International & World Politics, 10548, Arms Control, 1196144, Diplomacy, 3049231, Security, 271627011, Trades & Tariffs, 11099, Treaties, 5571266011, African, 5571267011, Asian, 5571268011, Australian & Oceanian, 5571269011, Canadian, 5571270011, Caribbean & Latin American, 5571271011, European, 5571272011, Middle Eastern, 5571273011, Russian & Former Soviet Union, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 468220, Business & Finance, 491564, Accounting, 684243011, Banking, 491578, Business Communication, 684244011, Business Development, 491580, Business Ethics, 491506, Business Law, 491584, Economics, 684245011, Entrepreneurship, 491594, Finance, 491602, Human Resources, 684246011, International Business, 684247011, Investments & Securities, 684248011, Management, 491624, Marketing, 684249011, Real Estate, 684250011, Sales, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491510, Constitutional Law, 468222, Law, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491470, International Relations, 491464, Political Science, 468214, Social Sciences, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books

[SR: 5854600], Hardcover, [EAN: 9781588263803], Lynne Rienner Publishers, Lynne Rienner Publishers, Book, [PU: Lynne Rienner Publishers], 2005-08-31, Lynne Rienner Publishers, In this examination of the international negotiations of data privacy, Heisenberg (European studies, Johns Hopkins U. School of Advanced International Studies) investigates the politics of the European Data Protection Directive, passed in 1995, and the 2000 Safe Harbor Agreement. The emphasis of the text is on understanding how the Europeans were able to create a European standard that harmonized different data protection systems within Europe, and how the short term focus of the U.S. administration toward the data protection issue created an opening for other states to follow the lead of the EU. How did the European Union come to be the global leader in setting data privacy standards? And what is the significance of this development?
