Celebrating the New World - Paperback

2006, ISBN: 9781566630139

ID: 844249737

Cambridge University Press/ Foundation Books, 2006. First edition. Paperback. New. Post nineteen eighties, what made English translation from Indian languages a culturally desirable activity? This question leads Kothari to examine the changing cultural universe of urban, English-speaking middle class in India. She examines in detail readership patterns, attitudes to English, and the course of translation studies in general. The comfort with which English is used with an Indian language as in ""Yeh Dil Maange More"" or ""Hungry Kya"" reflects a sense of familiarity that has been made with English. From this broader context of bilingualism in the first part of the book, Kothari moves on to the state of Gujarat. Taking up the case of Gujarati, she demonstartes the micro issues involved in translations and politics of language. Kothari asks new questions in translation studies and makes the production, reception and marketability of English translation her chief concern. Translating India brings amultidisciplinary perspective to literature and translation, authenticity and representation. Contents Acknowledgements 1. Introduction 2. Recalling: English Translations in Colonial India 3. The Two-Worlds Theory 4. Within Academia 5. Outside the Discipline Machine 6. Publishers` Perspective 7. The Case of Gujarati 8. Publisher Weekly Acknowledging that recent views of the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago deem it an exercise in racism, class and gender domination, social control and cultural regression, Muccigrosso ( American Gothic ) argues for a more nuanced interpretation in this lucid, informative book. After exploring the culture of 19th-century world's fairs, and the development of Chicago politically, ethnically and architecturally, he turns to the exposition itself: topics include the controversy of the buildings' neoclassical design, the display of new technology, tension between high and low culture and the mixed references to both wilderness and urban life. The exposition had an important influence on architecture and urban beautification; while its focus marginalized Native Americans and African Americans, Muccigrosso urges an understanding of the event's temporal context. The displays of non-Western cultures and world religions, he writes, showed an urge to transcend geographical limits and create a world's fair. ., Ivan R. Dee, 1993
