Heaven and Earth in Ancient Greek Cosmology: From Thales to Heraclides Ponticus (Astrophysics and Space Science Library) - hardcover

[SR: 4677899], Hardcover, [EAN: 9781441981158], Springer, Springer, Book, [PU: Springer], Springer, In Miletus, about 550 B.C., together with our world-picture cosmology was born. This book tells the story. In Part One the reader is introduced in the archaic world-picture of a flat earth with the cupola of the celestial vault onto which the celestial bodies are attached. One of the subjects treated in that context is the riddle of the tilted celestial axis. This part also contains an extensive chapter on archaic astronomical instruments. Part Two shows how Anaximander (610-547 B.C.) blew up this archaic world-picture and replaced it by a new one that is essentially still ours. He taught that the celestial bodies orbit at different distances and that the earth floats unsupported in space. This makes him the founding father of cosmology. Part Three discusses topics that completed the new picture described by Anaximander. Special attention is paid to the confrontation between Anaxagoras and Aristotle on the question whether the earth is flat or spherical, and on the battle between Aristotle and Heraclides Ponticus on the question whether the universe is finite or infinite., 4880, Greece, 4873, Ancient Civilizations, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 13449, Cosmology, 13439, Astronomy & Space Science, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 13871, History & Philosophy, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 14545, Physics, 14547, Acoustics & Sound, 16052391, Applied, 13445, Astrophysics, 13514, Biophysics, 13567, Chaos Theory, 16052341, Chemical Physics, 13449, Cosmology, 14554, Dynamics, 226697, Electromagnetism, 13839, Electron Microscopy, 52215011, Energy, 52164011, Engineering, 16052121, Entropy, 226502, Gas Mechanics, 13605, Geophysics, 14561, Gravity, 14563, Light, 14567, Mathematical Physics, 14569, Mechanics, 13850, Microscopy, 14573, Nanostructures, 14576, Nuclear Physics, 14589, Optics, 16052671, Quantum Chemistry, 14581, Quantum Theory, 14592, Relativity, 14585, Solid-State Physics, 14596, System Theory, 14598, Time, 14601, Waves & Wave Mechanics, 75, Science & Math, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 684268011, Ancient, 468230, History, 468206, Humanities, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books, 491732, Physics, 468216, Science & Mathematics, 465600, New, Used & Rental Textbooks, 2349030011, Specialty Boutique, 283155, Books
