Such is the Scripture teaching respecting Baptismal grace. Now, before proceeding to consider what conclusions the study of the New Testament compels us to adopt respecting the Baptism of Infants and the grace they receive in it, let me dwell upon some considerations which the plan of the accompanying tract, and the limits to which I had restricted myself in writing it, obliged me to pass over without notice. 1. The doctrine of Baptism, as contained in Scripture, is, in some important respects, more unqualified and absolute than that deducible from the Prayer-hook. (a) Assuming that our Lord's words, " Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter, into the kingdom of God," refer to Baptism, then the necessity of Baptism is declared absolutely, for the words of Christ contain no qualifying or limiting expression; whereas, in the Prayer-book, a very important qualification is suggested by the language of the Office for the Baptism of such as are of riper years, in the words " Ye see the necessity of Baptism where it may be had." Of course the limitation or qualification is quite justifiable; but it is no less the fact that the limitation is expressed in the Prayer-book, not in the Bible. (6) The worthy receiver of Baptism, i. e, the man who receives it in repentance and faith, is most distinctly said, in the New Testament, to be "saved " by it. "The like figure whereunto even Baptism doth also now save us " (1 Pet. iii. 21). Again, "By His mercy He saved us by the Bath of New Birth and renewing of the Holy Ghost " (Titus iii. 5). " He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved" (Mark xvi. 16). In the service of our Church for the Baptism of A.
