Excerpt from the Preface: recently a group of long-time residents met to recall the way Chantilly used to be. Each had their own story of what Chantilly had meant to them during their lifetime. We realized that Chantilly had changed. Never again would Chantilly be what it was before Dulles Airport, before the commercial and industrial development, and before the many subdivisions. A way of life which we had known had passed into history. We realized also that our memories would soon be history too, unless they were recorded and saved for present and future generations. The idea of a book about Chantilly was born. Instead of having one author, there would be more than 20 authors with memories reaching back to the early 1900s. Recalling what our parents and grandparents have told us allows some of the stories to precede the Civil War years.
