San Francisco, Calif.: The San Francisco Call, 1900. Excellent page one content with headline announcing that the legation held hostage in Peking was safe after fears they had all been killed. Large photo of diplomats and their wives accompanies the page one text. An antique ;newspaper suitable for framing. Much other content from the beginning of the 20th century including photos in this famous old newspaper. Paper a bit fragile requiring care in handling but there are only some minor tears along fold lines. And a small piece of paper torn off at margin along lower right edge, not affecting readability of text on the front page but affecting the non-associated story on page two slightly.. Disbound Antique Newspaper. Abt. Very Good/N/A. Illus. by Photos and Drawings in Newspaper Text. Folio, 30pp., The San Francisco Call, 1900, Oxford.: Holo Press.. 2000.. Maps, black and white illustrations, xviii + 408pp, notes, biographic notes, bibliography, index, paperback. A fascinating account filled with first person accounts of the Siege of Peking through female eyes. Although the story of the siege has been told very many times the voices of the 149 foreign women present have barely been heard. This is particularly surprising not only as many of women wrote about their experiences but also the ruler of China at the time was also a woman, which leads one to questions about the possible effect that the developing relations between the women and the Empress may have had on the situation both before and after the siege. This well researched book contains biographical details of almost all of the western women present. The author has also included information about the Chinese women involved where she has been able to. Previous histories of the siege have not taken into our account the feelings and experiences of the women present and thus give a rather narrow view of the events. This is Susanna Hoe's fourth book about foreign women and China and is an important addition to the essential body of women's history. ., Holo Press., 2000.

[SR: 1212667], Paperback, [EAN: 9780953773060], Bargain Price, Holo Books, Holo Books, Book, [PU: Holo Books], Holo Books, On 20 June 1900, Baron von Ketteler, the German Minister, was assassinated in a Peking street. By 4pm the first shots were fired into the legation quarter and the siege of foreigners by Boxers and imperial troops had begun. Among the besieged were 148 women from America, Europe, Russia and Japan and Maud, the Baron's American widow. What were their experiences? How did they cope with their 79 children for two months, without enough to eat, often under fire? This book tells their story - of courage, grief, humour, friendship, ill-health, and hard work - mostly through their own accounts. It identifies the women for the first time as individuals: missionary teachers and doctors, "globe trotters", and the wives of diplomats, officials, railway engineers, merchants, bankers and the owner of the Peking Hotel., 4891, China, 4884, Asia, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 15812211, Women in History, 5035, World, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11325, Women's Studies, 271632011, Abortion & Birth Control, 11332, Feminist Theory, 11336, History, 11388, Motherhood, 11344, Women Writers, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5571267011, Asian, 11093, International & World Politics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 747400, Terrorism, 5571258011, Specific Topics, 5571255011, Politics & Government, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books
