Four page Arizona Game and Fish Department Big Game Bulletin (Revision 9/66) entitled Pronghorn Antelope is pasted in after the index. These phantoms of the grassland and sagebrush, are mentioned in most North American narratives of history and exploration, but because of their elusiveness they are treated sketchily even in works of natural history. Though scattered widely throughout the West, this fleet animal, as symbolic of freedom as the eagle, may be facing the end of the trail because so few of us have met it face to face in the the Great West and, thus, have failed to learn its problems of survival. This is a book with a poignant message on conservation, restoration, and management. It sets the standard for the wise and thrifty use of this singular wild game species, showing clearly that by sound management the pronghorn can again reoccupy much of its former range and reach an abundance. There appears to be little ground for competition between cattle, sheep, and the pronghorn due to its weed eating habits. The far-flung bands of pronghorns rivaled the great buffalo herds in numbers. Twenty-five years ago the pronghorn, a lone species on this earth, seemed on the verge of extinction. Contents in Five Chapters: History Distribution and Abundance, Characteeristics and Life History, Pronghorn Antelope in Relation to Civilization, Management of the Antelope Resource, and How to Hunt Antelope. Plus Preface, Interoduction, Epilogue and Appendix. A book from the Jack McK. Pardee Collection. Mr. Pardee was a collector of Americana who focused on frontier and natural history, hunting, wildlife, and firearms and is noted not only for his book selections but for his careful handling and storage. Most of his collection had faultless interior pages. E-mail for scans or more information regarding the Pardee collection. . Hard Back.
