London: Imperial War Museum, 1990. Dust jacket tears, small piece missing from back, unclipped. Red clothwith bright gilt lettering on spine. 182 pages clean and tight. In September 1940 the three eldest children of Grace and John Mathews - Clifford aged 12, Sheila 10 and Dinah 5 - travelled from their home near Southampton to Liverpool and embarked in the liner Antonia to make the hazardous passage across the U-boat infested waters of the North Atlantic. They were among some 5,000 British children who were evacuated to the United States during the Second World War. It was not until two months later that the Mathews heard that their son and daughters had arrived safely and that they were staying with families in Ohio in the industrial heartland of America. So began a period of separation which was to last for nearly five years. As can be imagined, the letters from the children and their American foster parents were eagerly read and carefully preserved, especially as John Mathews felt that they would contain the story of an interesting exercise in human and international relations. He believed that his children had a job to do as ambassadors for Britain in the United States. Many years later this correspondence, together with carbon copies of John Mathews's letters, was discovered by his youngest daughter Jocelyn, who had remained in England with her parents. Special Relations consists of a selection of these unusual letters, which document a relatively little-known aspect of the wartime evacuation scheme. Written by ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, they give an intimate, absorbing and often touching glimpse of domestic life on both sides of the Atlantic during the war, as it was experienced at the time. Jacket illustration by Jean-Paul Tibbles. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good. Illus. by Photographs. 4to., Imperial War Museum, 1990
