This ingeniously plotted, briskly paced novel by a winner of France's Prix Goncourt prize chronicles the careers of two ambitious young Englishmen, Cyril Pumpermaker and Jonathan Varlet, who pull off a stupendous literary hoax in the 1930s and become fabulously wealthy in the process. When Cyril writes a melodramatic first novel called Beelzebub, Jonathan, who cheerfully admits to having no literary talent, claims the work as his own, under the nom de plume Gilbert Keith Chesterfield. His knack for promotion turns Beelzebub , as well as Cyril's subsequent novels, into bestsellers on both sides of the Atlantic. Still posing as Chesterfield, Jonathan becomes a courageous critic of nascent Nazism and fascism, while Cyril, a reclusive boor, finds his own personality deepens with the ruse. Tristan's witty observations are not limited to the historical period, but encompass a wide variety of metaphysical topics. Although it ends on a discordant note, his novel, propelled by the author's madcap imagination, celebrates life., William Morrow, 1991., Toronto, ON, Canada: HarperCollins Canada, Limited, 1996. 0/0. 1996. First Edition Thus [1995], Thirty-Fourth Printing. Academic Press Paperback. This is a superb edition of one of the basic works in Western philosophy. Designed to be used by both casual and serious students of philosophy, this edition contains the text of Hume's Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding and a series of other sections that provide background and further directions for studying Hume. Included are an excellent precis of the Treatise of Human Nature, a first rate annotated bibliography concerning works by and about Hume, considerable background material on Hume, and excellent notes to the text. The Essay is a concise and charmingly written presentation of Hume's views of the nature and particularly the limitations of human knowledge. In it Hume presents his basic concepts of human thought, human pattern recognition, and then proceeds to Hume's revolutionary analysis of the problem of induction. Hume exposes our limitations in establishing certain cause and effect relations. Hume's analysis of this problem and its corollaries leads to ultimate skepticism about our ability to know the external world with certainty and undermines much of the basis for religion. Hume presents his ideas in an attractive style that owes much to famous 18th century essayists like Addison. A fundamental and very readable work., Prentice-Hall, 1995., Limited Editions Club. Paperback. GOOD. Gently used may contain ex-library markings, possibly has some light highlighting, textual notations, and or underlining. Text is still easily readable., Limited Editions Club

Tapestry of Hope is the story of Alice Kern, who was interned during World War II along with millions of other European Jews. She experienced the horrors of both Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen and weighed less than fifty pounds when finally liberated by the American Forces. In 1944, all Jews in the small town of Sighet, Romania were rounded up and shipped off to Poland. Alice and her mother were among them. They were allowed only the clothes on their backs. Other personal and household belongings were left behind. Among those belongings was a large and beautiful tapestry which had been promised to Alice's brother, Zoli. (Detailed description of the tapestry may be found in the Preface.) Recovery of the tapestry would be a longed-for and miraculous result of this book. And it would be handsomely rewarded. In the meantime, Ailce Kern's story as related in these pages will both shock and inspire. You will find it a truly dramatic story of courage and perseverance, a powerful story, plainly told, strangely free of bitterness. It is, in fact, a tapestry of hope, too. biographical, biographies, biographies and history, biography and history, history Biographies, Limited Editions Club
