Bygone Helston and the Lizard - First edition

1987, ISBN: 0850336295

Hardcover, ID: 7031859155

[EAN: 9780850336290], Gebraucht, wie neu, [PU: Phillimore and Co Ltd], TOPOGRAPHY, History|Europe|Great Britain|General, 128p. Helston, the gateway to the Lizard, has long been a market town of some importance and , indeed, was a coinage town serving the mining districts to the West and North. But no mining affected the peninsula, so that it was never changed by engine houses or rows of miners' cottages. It remained a haunted and superstitious land of contrasts, often called the Gemini peninsula, where smuggling was rife and, at some time, every cliff, cove or inlet has seen a shipwreck. The Cornish language was spoken until well into the 17th century and old Celtic beliefs and customs still survive. The most famous is Helston's Furry Dance, with its roots in the pagan festival to welcome the Celtic summer. This most southerly part of Britain moved slowly into the 20th century and old photographs capture scenes not only that had been largely unchanged for centuries but are not so different from present day. Many of the photographs used by the author in this book are from private collections and previously unpublished. Together with her well researched and lively text, they will bring to life stories of tragedy and heroism on the dramatic and dangerous coast, small but hardy communities scraping a living from farming or fishing, well known local characters, famous artists and ancient customs. Illustrated with 149 B/W photographs. As new in exceptionally fine condition. Dust jacket has been price clipped by publisher as original price sticker remains.
