Gallery Books, 1985. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 9.5" X 12. H/B 128 pages, condition is very good. Frederic Sackrider Remington and Charles Marion Russell were the two most famous Western artists that America has ever produced. Both of them were born in the 1860s - Remington in Canton, New York and Russell in St Louis, Missouri. Both went west as very young men to fulfill a dream and almost immediately began to capture the life of the plains, the Indians, the cavalry and cowboys in sketches, on canvas and in sculpture. Remington is best known for his action-filled paintings of the western plains. Among his most famous paintings are Cavalry Charge on the Southern Plains, A Dash for the Timber and The Scout: Friends or Enemies? He travelled with the Army during the Indian wars, lived and worked with cowboys on the range, shot antelope and buffalo and lived for a time with friendly Indians. Russell, nicknamed the Cowboy Artist, captured the life of the old West in oil and bronze, portraying Indians, frontiersmen, cowboys and even the animals of the western plains and mountains. He is probably most famous for his paintings Waiting for a Chinook and Lewis and Clark at Ross' Hole and his sculpture, The Bucking Bronco. Russell went west at the age of 16 and worked as a cowboy, never returning east to live. This lavishly illustrated volume contains over fifty reproductions of the paintings and sculpture of these two geniuses in full color.
