Though well versed in the wisdom of the street, he grew up to be a sensitive, warm-hearted man, who managed to escape his meager lifestyle and transcend into the elite world of the fine arts. It was toward the end of the Gilded Age, when his artistic talent took shape, the Roaring Twenties, when it flourished and the depths of the Great Depression, when it came to an early and abrupt end. It is ironic that James Novelli, whose sculptures were dedicated to keeping alive the memory of our country’s heroes and fallen soldiers, should himself have fallen into a regrettable obscurity.
