Hardcover, ID: 7985523889

[EAN: 9780813333991], Near Fine, [PU: Westview Press, Boulder, CO], WORLD WAR II, UNIT HISTORIES, OFFICIAL HISTORY, THUNDERBIRD DIVISION, 45TH INFANTRY DACHAU, SICILY, ANZIO, SALERNO, NATIVE AMERICANS, TROY MIDDLETON, MESSINA, VOLTURNO, THE WINTER LINE, OPERATION SHINGLE, DRAGOON, MOSELLE, NURNBERG, MUNICH, XXI CORPS, XV CORPS., History|Military|World War II, History|Military|United States, History|Military|Strategy, Jacket, 479 pages. Complete title: The Rock of Anzio - From Sicily to Dachau: A History of the U.S. 45th Infantry Division. From the dust jacket: "While the Germans decimated most of the Allied units at Anzio, they threw their strongest efforts against one American division - the 45th Infantry Division. The 45th was a National Guard unit made up of "citizen soldiers" from the Southwest, including thousands of Native Americans. Through sheer determination and against overwhelming odds, the 45th Division "Thunderbirds" saved the beachhead at Anzio from annihilation, just as they had done at Salerno six months earlier, breaking the back of the German onslaught. Eight members of the 45th - including the first three Native Americans so honored - earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for the division's 511 days of combat. From Italy, the 45th went on to blaze a distinguished path through France and Germany, suffering some of the heaviest casualty rates of any U.S. Army unit in World War II. And in its final days, the 45th Infantry Division liberated the notorious Dachau concentration camp, resulting in a controversial incident in which Nazi camp guards were executed by outraged American soldiers - a shocking story told here in complete detail for the first time". Approx 55 photographs. 26 maps. Dust jacket edges age toned. Light aging on internal pages. Binding tight. Steve's Bookshelves LLC Inventory #02-000679-1456.

Summary: "The 45th was one of the great divisions of the U.S. Army in World War II and deserves to have its story told. The Rock of Anzio is extremely well written, original, and well documented. Whitlock does full justice to the remarkable bravery and sacrifice of the men of the 45th". Carlo D'Este Author of PattonAnzio was one of the greatest battles of World War II -- a desperate gamble to land a large amphibious force behind German lines in Italy in the hope that the war could be shortened by capturing Rome. It also turned out to be one of the bloodiest battles in U.S. military history. While the Germans decimated most of the Allied units at Anzio, they threw their strongest attempts to split the beachhead against one American division -- the 45th Infantry Division. The 45th was a National Guard unit made up of "citizen soldiers" from the Southwest, including thousands of Native Americans.Based on extensive research into archives, photos, letters, diaries, previously classified official records, and scores of personal interviews with surviving veterans of the 45th, The Rock of Anzio is written with an immediacy that puts the reader right onto the battlefield and shows us war through the eyes of ordinary men called upon to perform extraordinary deeds.

Anzio was one of the greatest battles of World War II - a desperate gamble to land a large amphibious force behind German lines in Italy in the hope that the war could be shortened by capturing Rome. It also turned out to be one of the bloodiest battles in US military history. Allied forces quickly found themselves trapped on the beach-head, forced to endure great hardships, and subjected to four months of constant German attacks. While the Germans decimated most of the Allied units at Anzio, they threw their strongest efforts into attempts to split the beach-head against one American division - the 45th Infantry Division. This account of the battle is based on extensive research into archives, photographs, letters, diaries, previously classified official records, and scores of interviews with surviving veterans of the 45th - a National Guard unit made up of citizen soldiers from the Southwest, including thousands of American Indians. These Indians were now members of some of the regiments which their ancestors had met in battle a century before. The 45th Division saved the beach-head at Anzio from annihilation, and in the war's final days they liberated Dachau. This resulted in a controversial incident in which Nazi camp guards were executed by outraged American soldiers - a story told here in detail. history, military, military science, regiments, world war ii History, Basic Books
