This study takes a different approach to the work of poet-playwright Clifford Odets. Rather than focusing on biographical and political factors surrounding his works, Cantor provides a close reading of 11 of Odets' plays as a whole, grounding his study within an analysis of themes common to each text. While granting emphasis to Odets' poetic style, Cantor gives due notice to Odets' achievements This study takes a different approach to the work of poet-playwright Clifford Odets. Rather than focusing on biographical and political factors surrounding his works, Cantor provides a close reading of 11 of Odets' plays as a whole, grounding his study within an analysis of themes common to each text. While granting emphasis to Odets' poetic style, Cantor gives due notice to Odets' achievements as both mythmaker and voice of the Jewish middle class. Included are reprints of 'Sum and Substance,' an interview with the writer conducted by the late Herman Harvey, and a 1998 interview by Cantor with actress/director Joanne Woodward, who has directed recent revivals of four of Odets' plays. Cantor also gives an account of other noted productions in order to illuminate the ways in which this visionary's style has influenced contemporary American theatre. Drawing both from previous works and his own research, Cantor presents a quintessential study of a prolific and influential literary artist. It will prove a useful and timely volume for scholars of theatre and American social history alike. Clifford Odets: Playwright-Poet - Paperback

ISBN: 9780810837324

[ED: Taschenbuch], [PU: SCARECROW PR INC], This study seeks to take a different approach to the analysis of Clifford Odets and his plays. Rather than focusing on the biographical and political factors surrounding his works, Hal Cantor makes a commitment to the playwright himself, amidst the opinions of other critics. Cantor emphasizes the richness of language and dramatic excitement of Odets' plays. He looks at the plays as a single unit. While he puts some emphasis on biographical material, the major focus of the study is on the themes, characters and language that have made Odets' plays so unique. Included is a reprint of "The Sum and Substance", the original interview with Odets conducted by the late Herman Harvey. Cantor also brings to light some of the more recent productions of Odets' plays and includes an interview he conducted with Joanne Woodward, demonstrating how Odets' work has become a major part of American theatre. This second edition contains an expanded final chapter, to add a few topics that Cantor sees as important to the life of the playwright.Versandfertig in über 4 Wochen, [SC: 0.00]
