ISBN: 0807205648

Audio Cassette, [EAN: 9780807205648], Listening Library (Lib), Listening Library (Lib), Book, [PU: Listening Library (Lib)], Listening Library (Lib), Fourteen years have passed since the necromancer Sabriel bound the Greater Dead Adept Kerrigor beyond the Ninth Gate and helped restore King Touchstone to the Old Kingdom throne. Now she rules at his side as Abhorsen, the sole necromancer of the Old Kingdom, keeping the people safe from the dark power of Free Magic. But this is not just Sabriel's tale. It is also the story of Hedge, a mysterious necromancer who is digging up a monstrous evil that could utterly destroy the Old Kingdom. And it is the story of Prince Sameth, Touchstone and Sabriel's only son, who would rather fight an entire army of Dead than disappoint his beloved parents. And Sam's friend Nick, who has unknowingly loosed Free Magic into the Old Kingdom, blissfully ignorant of its complete malevolence. But mostly, this is the tale of Lirael, the only daughter of the future-seeing Clayr who does not possess the Sight. Burying the pain of her Sightlessness in the Clayr's great library, Third Assistant Librarian Lirael's insatiable curiosity will soon lead her to an unbelievable destiny that may even be connected with that of the great Sabriel herself. Garth Nix's stunning sequel to Sabriel, full of Mages, Moggets, and even a Disreputable Dog, is on par with the equally superb works of Philip Pullman and William Nicholson. And fantasy lovers of all ages will be thrilled to discover that Lirael ends with more questions than answers, which will mean a third dip into Nix's beguiling Charter Magic. Both exhilarating and mesmerizing, this fine novel is pure enchantment. Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr (The Abhorsen Trilogy) - used book

2002, ISBN: 0807205648

[SR: 6110888], Audio Cassette, [EAN: 9780807205648], Audiobook, Unabridged, Listening Library, Listening Library, Book, [PU: Listening Library], 2002-10-01, Listening Library, Middle books in fantasy trilogies are sometimes disappointing, but Garth Nix has created in Lirael a fine successor to Sabriel that both complements its precursor and sets up a mouth-watering dénouement for the final instalment in Abhorsen. Nix continues by setting this new story in the neighbouring worlds of Ancelstierre (no magic) and The Old Kingdom (lots of magic) but introduces several new and substantial characters that are as strong and fascinating as those in the first book. In the Old Kingdom, while the Abhorsen Sabriel is off fighting the undead, who are waking in worryingly ever-increasing numbers, Lirael is alone in the glacial mountain kingdom of the Clayr dreaming of when she will receive the gift of "the sight"--which all true daughters of Clayr possess. She fills the long wait with years of self-taught charter magic and investigations into what lies in the depths of the Clayr library--a truly vast and ancient place. In Ancelstierre, Prince Sameth, son of Sabriel and designated Abhorsen-in-waiting, is battling with his own inner demons. His own familiarity with charter magic is limited and it even sometimes scares him. This weight of expectation is crystallised when he is attacked by an evil necromancer intent on killing him. Sameth barely escapes with his life. In these times of increased undead activity, Sabriel suspects a greater force at work. Sameth must return to the Old Kingdom and learn fast to help counter this enormous threat while Lirael too must play her part. She is a girl with an important destiny and is sent out towards the area of darkness and mystery that holds the key to what has been happening. Nix's imagination continues to impress all and his Sabriel trilogy is so far proving to be the award-winning spectacle that it has promised to be. The book is recommended for ages 10 and above. --John McLay, 1025612, Subjects, 349777011, Antiquarian, Rare & Collectable, 91, Art, Architecture & Photography, 67, Biography, 68, Business, Finance & Law, 507848, Calendars, Diaries & Annuals, 69, Children's Books, 274081, Comics & Graphic Novels, 71, Computing & Internet, 72, Crime, Thrillers & Mystery, 496792, Education Studies & Teaching, 9587997031, Erotica, 62, Fiction, 66, Food & Drink, 275835, Gay & Lesbian, 74, Health, Family & Lifestyle, 65, History, 64, Home & Garden, 63, Horror, 89, Humour, 275738, Languages, 61, Mind, Body & Spirit, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 275389, Poetry, Drama & Criticism, 59, Reference, 58, Religion & Spirituality, 88, Romance, 5106747031, School Books, 57, Science & Nature, 4034595031, Science Fiction & Fantasy, 564334, Scientific, Technical & Medical, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 55, Sports, Hobbies & Games, 83, Travel & Holiday, 52, Young Adult, 266239, Books
