Women and Mental Health (Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences) - Paperback

1998, ISBN: 080186089X

ID: 1296765865

[EAN: 9780801860898], Neubuch, [PU: New York Academy of Sciences], PSYCHOLOGY::GENERAL, 080186089X A century ago, in "The Yellow Wallpaper," Charlotte Perkins Oilman described the treatment of a young woman for "temporary nervous depression." Both the illness and the prescribed treatment are understood by the physician-in this case the woman's husband-from a heavily gendered perspective. The patient is confined to a bedroom with a vertiginous yellow wallpaper, a heavy immoveable bedstead, and barred windows, with a gate at the head of the stairs. There is no therapy: her "treatment" consists of fresh air, rest, and, to build up her strength, "cod liver oil and lots of tonics and things, to say nothing of ale and wine and rare meat." But perhaps its most important aspect is the incarceration and immobilization. All activity, even reading, writing, and conversation, is severely curtailed. It is not surprising, then, that instead of achieving the intended remission of symptoms, the "cure" produces the opposite result: the patient becomes insane. This fictionalized account reflected Oilman's own treatment for depression years earlier by the most renowned neurologist of the time, Silas Weir Mitchell. A women's illness was seen in the context of the social and cultural construction of women's "normal" and appropriate lives, which showed, according to the scientific evidence of the time, that the essential nature of a woman was "not to be strong and competent, but. . . to be a patient."2 In Oilman's own account and in this story, mental health is physical health, conceived according to a male model, and therefore, by extension, imperfect in a woman. The neglect of woman's mental health has had a long history. According to Ann Douglas Wood and G. Barker-Benfield, "Women's health care has always mirrored a male-dominated world."3'4 These authors perceived Victorian physicians as "maintaining a status quo by keeping women subordinate in domestic and maternal roles." Over the last decade, however, this perception has begun to change. 226 pages. Your order ships by the next business day!

Women and Mental Health - used book

1990, ISBN: 9780801860898

ID: 3223927

The 1990s have seen an increased focus on issues relating to women's health--including mental and addicitve disorders. During this period, the alarming inequities in women's health research have come to light, including the failure to include women in clinical trials, inadequate attention to gender differences in biomedical, behavioral, and health services research, insufficient funding for research on women's health concerns, and the dearth of women in senior health care professional and scientific positions in U.S. federal and academic research institutions. At the same time, tremendous advances in theunderstanding of the causes of mental disorders have resulted in new and effective treatment, helpint to shatter the myths surrounding these illnesses. In this volume, a distinguished group of authorities focuses on the convergence of these two critical yet understudied areas--women's health and mental health issues. Topics include teen parenting, childhood depression and suicide, child abuse, sexual abuse, alcoholism, work and family, spousal abuse, dementia and Alzheimer's disorders. Contributors: Jeri A. Sechzer, Sheila M. Pfafflin, Florence L. Denmark, Anne Griffin, Susan J. Blumenthal, Judith Kaufman, Donna Moreau, Clare E. Cosentino, Michelle Collins, Katherine A. Halmi, Lynn Gamwell, Jean M. Cirillo, Khaya Novick, Angelynn Pinto, Carmen Inoa Vazquez, Margot Nadien, Rosa Maria Gil, June F. Chisholm, Linda Moy Shum, Beverly Greene.
