Eight women, mothers or guardians of hearing-impaired children, get an opportunity here to speak about their own and their child's experience with deaf education programs. Kommatea-Steyer (Lexington School for the Deaf) shows how qualitative action research works as she investigates the effectiveness of deaf education amongst minorities, starting with a review of the literature including the most recent research. She presents the narratives of the women, then takes a cross-case analysis to locate themes and metathemes, finding significant linkage in diagnosis and prognosis, obtaining information and services, and participating in the appropriate program. She finds parental involvement to be essential to learning, but notes that cultural and linguistic minorities have significantly different experiences than whites.
