From the dust jacket: "From America's preeminent military historian, Stephen E. Ambrose, comes a brilliant telling of the war in Europe, form D-Day, June 6, 1944, to the end, eleven months later, on May 7, 1945. This authoritative narrative account is drawn by the author himself from his five acclaimed books about that conflict, most particularly from the definitive and comprehensive D-Day and from Citizen Soldiers . . . The Victors also includes stories of individual battles, raids, acts of courage, and suffering from Pegasus Bridge, an account of the first engagement of D-Day, when a detachment of British airborne troops stormed the German defense forces and paved the way for the Allied invasion; and form Band of Brothers, an account of an American rifle company from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment who fought, died, and conquered, form Utah Beach through the Bulge and on to Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Germany." ., Simon & Schuster, 1998, (Subject: World War II - Western Europe) The story of the war in Europe from D-Day, June 6, 1944 to it's end on May 7, 1945. Told from the perspective of the men involved, starting with the assault by British Airborne forces on Pegasus Bridge and Merville Battery paving the way for the invasion, to the taking of Hitler's 'Eagle's Nest' by an American Rifle Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment - 'The Band of Brothers'. First edition, as stated. Hardcover. Fine+/very good. This volume opens with an Outline of the history of America beginning with its discovery (1000-1550) and taking us through the year of publication (1935); covering events of historical significance via pictures with captions. This is not a "textual" novel; rather, every page is a picture(s) with a paragraph of explanation. A very interesting, visual look at the history of America. At the end of the book are pictures and brief biographical paragraphs of each American President up to and including Franklin Delano Rosevelt who was in office at the time of publication. This is a very attractive volume in FINE condition. The covers are navy blue cloth with gilt bands across the front and spine which serve as the background for the Navy Blue Lettering. There is an American Eagle on an Olive Branch at the top of the spine, also in gilt, and bands of gilt stars on the spine between lines of lettering. The covers and spine are in pristine condition with the gilt still bright and unmarked. Top page edges of book are dyed navy blue. Interior of book is in like new condition also, with no markings or soiling. from color of pages, it is possible that they are slightly age toned, but really hard to tell if they are toned or if that was the color of the paper at time of printing. Dust Jacket is age toned; and has just a few small closed tears, but is still in very good condition. Interior binding/hinges are like new; volume is completely clean - no markings whatsoever. 447 pages; 8vo (9 1/4" X 6 1/2") HEAVY VOLUME - will require slight upcharge on shipping -- see below This is an OVERSIZED book and will require extra shipping charge. Continuing the brilliant World War Two fighter pilot series - this time the theatre of war is the incredible story of the Siege of Malta. Summer 1941. The tiny island of Malta, held by the British and a crucial supply point for the Allies, has become the most bombed place on earth. The Germans and Italians want to destroy it. For the fighter pilots of the RAF, initially equipped with ageing Hurricanes and outnumbered in the air, defeat seems almost certain. Flight commanders, Englishman Kit Curtis and American Ossie Wolf make an unlikely alliance. Both have survived the Fall of France and the Battle of Britain but Curtis remains idealistic and eager to prove himself. Wolf, by contrast, is ruthless and thrives in the chaos of imminent invasion. But as each man is tested to the limit, they come to share a common purpose and fresh understanding. The experiences of these pilots and their comrades are vividly conveyed in a novel of compelling pace and power, made still more real by meticulous research that captures the spirit of the time. By turns brutal, funny, tragic and heroic here is a spellbinding tour de force, a brilliant sequel to the best-selling BLUE MAN FALLING. action and adventure, fiction, genre fiction, historical, historical fiction, literature and fiction, military, mystery thriller and suspense, thrillers, war Thrillers, Headline Review
