This book aims to redress that imbalance by bringing together the latest research on republicanism in Victorian society both up to and after its highpoint in the 1870s. Republicanism in Victorian Society (Sutton modern British history) by David S. Nash and Anthony Taylor (ed.s), published in 2000 in Great Britain in hardback with dustjacket by Sutton Publishing, pp.192, ISBN 075091856x. Acceptable, fair condition. Condition Notes: Wholly intact & readable copy which has a few superficial faults evident on it. The book is one of a few of the same title that we have in stock which has printing problems with the dustjacket - the dustjacket surface is discoloured & rough in texture and the print quality is poor. There is minor creasing to the dustjacket edge & corners and there are small lines of ingrained dirt on the top and bottom edges of the front and back dustjacket flaps. The 4 pages of plates in the middle of the book have had to be separated (they had slightly stuck together and there may be very slight surface damage where the plates had stuck together). There are also faint indent marks in places and occasional slight marks to the top of the book. Internally the pages are clean & tidy, but they do have some mild foxing to them (a browning or tanning effect, or small brown, orange and yellowish spots, which affects some papers as they age). On our copies, the foxing is mostly visible to the edges of the block of pages and there are both sporadic small brown spots and tanning). About this book: Though there has never been any large-scale political movement in its support, the idea of a British Republic has been a matter of heated public debate at several important points in recent history. This book aims to redress that imbalance by bringing together the latest research on republicanism in Victorian society both up to and after its highpoint in the 1870s. It examines the subject in great depth and aims to answer crucial questions: what did contemporaries take republicanism to mean? How far did the idea of republicanism extend beyond the radical movements of the 19th Century into popular consciousness? Why was there never a substantial republican movement in Victorian Britain? Divided into three sections, the book begins by introducing the contexts and agendas within which a discussion of republicanism needs to be framed. The second part considers the problem of defining and locating republicanism as well as tracing its varying appeal among differing strata of both middle and working classes. The third examines the legacies of republican thought, action and expression beyond the orthodoxises of late nineteenth-century radicalism. By reinterpreting radical culture and the exuberances of Victorian politics in novel and previously unresearched ways, this book provides a fresh and important view of Britain in the nineteenth century.
