Very Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Illustrations. acknowledgements, list of illustrations, list of engravings, introduction by authors, bibliography and illustration acknowledgements. Blue coloured endpapers. At the beginning of the text is a map of the Pacific region showing the course of the three voyages made by Captain James Cook in the 18th century. The text is illustrated with illustrations done by John Webber, artist who accompanied Cook on his third voyage – 1776 to 1780, and at the beginning of the text, between pages 4 and 5 are four pages of coloured illustrations. Buckram cloth covered boards with gilt titles to the backstrip. Colour illustrated dustwrapper with gilt coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. In his time Captain James Cook was acknowledged by his contemporaries as the greatest navigator and explorer in history. This book looks at the career of this man, but particularly at his third voyage of exploration that lasted from 1776 through to 1780. Using contemporary sources, logs and journals of men who sailed with him, we discover the newly discovered societies of the Pacific region, with descriptions of rights and customs along with the attitudes and prejudices by 18th-century civilised man towards the "Noble Savage". A little rubbing to the book corners and light age toning of the textblock edge. Previous owners details to the lower right-hand corner of the free front end paper. Rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and dustwrapper panels. There are a few tears to the dustwrapper edges ranging from 1.25" to 0.25". Size: Landscape Octavo. (4), V-XI, (3), 3-164 pages,.
