His wordsperhaps sum up Roberts influence on the groupoflate nine- teenth-century painters who havebecome recognised as Australias i mpressionist painters.Hissurpassing popularity, his posthumoustitlethefather of Australian painting, are basednot somuchon superiority of technique over his contemp- orariesbut on his decision to paint scenes that isolatedthose qualities he felt to be most typically Australian.He was one of the first Australian paintersto attemptto develop a distinctively Australian styleof painting.In this he was clearly influenced by theEuropean artof his day, having travelled and studiedin England andEurope. But always he modified techniques to suit theAustralian scene. Roberts was partic- ularly impressed by the plein airists and Whistlers suggestive,rather than precisely descriptive,paintingstyle.Even though he did not use all thetechniquesof the French impressionists, he didheighten colourto represent his impressions of light. But, basically, Roberts was a realist, and his best paintings arerealist representations of hissubject. Roberts was prolific in his output, and the subjects and stylesof his paintings weremany and varied. He painted street scenes, narratives, formal pastoral compositions, scenesfrom the bourgeois life of the 1880s and 1890s, incidents from the past and portraits.His leastsuccessful paintings were those which were symbol- ical or imaginative, and among his mostsuccessful were his portraits. But he is prob- ably best-known for his paintings of Australian outbacklife, such as Shearing the Rams, The Breakaway, The Golden Fleece and Bailed Up.Although thesewereexecuted en plein air, realistically, the results were not objective butemotive. He depicted the heroiclife of the outback worker, and seemed to ignore the sweatand toil. Virginia Spate has covered thefull range of Roberts oevre, tracing his work in England, Europe andAustralia from the 1880s to the1930s. She has discussed the nature of his paintingsin the contextof the European art from which hedrew his strength.
