Shroff Publishers/Rampant, 2003. Softcover. New. 15 x 23 cm. Oracle9i has become one of the world’s most complex databases, and this book is for the senior Oracle DBA who needs to automate the complex mechanisms that govern the RAM memory regions of any Oracle database. The dynamic memory features of Oracle9i make it possible to create a self-tuning database. This exciting book explores proven techniques for monitoring the behavior of the Oracle System Global Area (SGA) and shows proven techniques that can be used to anticipate upcoming problems and adjust the SGA before a performance problem occurs. Focusing on proactive tuning and scripting, this books show you how to collect historical data and use it to develop signatures for all memory areas. Using these metrics, you can develop scripts that will anticipate and correct upcoming SGA performance problems. Key Features: Presents a method for monitoring important SGA metrics over long time periods. Lists the commands to modify the Oracle9i SGA areas, including pga_aggregate_target, shared_pool and db_cache_size. Describes how to recognize patterns in RAM usage. Explores the use of the free STATSPACK utility to monitor and collect SGA information. Offers sample scripts for automating SGA tuning. Provides access to an online code deport, full of interesting Oracle scripts. Printed Pages: 156., Shroff Publishers/Rampant, 2003, Regency Publications/Daya Publishing House, 2004. Softcover. New. Development discourse had a spectacular and long career. But one rarely comes across a short overview of this in non-technical Language intelligible to scholars from different disciplines, policy makers, Bureaucrats and concerned citizens. This Book which constitutes the Texts of three Lectures delivered by a sociologist fills this gap. Tracing the conceptual History of the discourse on development the author locates the `cognitive blackouts` common to all the approaches to development namely, disparity, displacement, distress and Discrimination and suggests that to remedy this deficit we need to put development pluralism on the agenda. This is the argument of lecture I. Development is intended to address deprivation. Paradoxically the ongoing process of `development` not only deepened but also widened deprivation. The explanation of this paradox is sought in terms of the changing structure of deprivation and the new victims produced by the successive social revolutions. The need to stress the dialectical interwining between the Nature of the system and the unfolding deprivation is highlighted in lecture II. Lecture III critically examines the two routes prescribed to get out of the impasse created by development. Through an Examination of the role of Technology in human lives it has been demonstrated that technology has been both an oppressor and an emancipator. Therefore, technological pluralism, which recognizes different levels of technology, appropriates for different contexts and sectors in way out. After unfolding the inherent contradictions contained in viewing `development as freedom`, it is suggested that for rapid Material development freedom may have to be restricted at the initial Stage but for sustaining high quality of life in the long run freedom is an imperative. EARTH'S ONLY HOPE WAI THE COBRAI The colony worlds Adirondack and Silvern fall to the Trott forces almost without a struggle. Outnumbered and on the defensive. Earth made a desperate decision. It would attack the aliens not from space. but on the ground - with forces the Trotts did not even suspect. Thus were created the Cobras. a guerilla force whose weapons were surgically implanted. invisible to the unsuspecting eye yet undeniably deadly. But power brings temptation ... and not all the Cobras could be trusted to fight for Earth alone. Jonny Moreau would learn the uses - and abuses - of his special abilities. and what it truly meant to be a Cobra! HE WAS SUSPENDED SOME FIVE METERS ABOVE THE FLOOR The night before he had warned himself of the dangers of apathy. Now, for one awful instant all the time he had-he recognized that overconfidence extracted an equally bitter price. The sharp twang of released springs filled his enhanced hearing, and the servos within his arms snapped his fingertip lasers into position faster than his brain could register the black wall hurtling itself toward him. The flying wall reached him, and he had just enough time to notice it was actually a net before it hit, wrapping itself around him like a giant cocoon. A split second later he was jerked sharply off his original path as unnoticed suspension lines reached their limit, snapping him back to hang more or less upside down in the middle of the room. And Jonny was captured ... which, since he was a Cobra, meant that he was dead. ISBN 0-671-65560-4 <br/><br/> <br/><br/>, Baen Books, 1991

About Timothy Zahn: "Zahn keeps the story moving at a breakneck pace, maintaining excitement."—Publishers Weekly "[Y]ou can count on Timothy Zahn for three things: clean, sparse prose; good pacing; and great action scenes. The first book in the Cobra War series hits all those marks in admirable style and makes for a quick, entertaining sci-fi novel."—Blogcritics "[Conqueror’s Heritage] is another finely wrought space adventure . . . [with] social, political and emotional complications, all of which Zahn treats with his usual skill."—Booklist "Zahn paints every detail [in Angelmass] with gleamy realism . . . scientific dialogue that streams with starship hardware and military trooper talk . . . immensely appealing."—Kirkus Review literature and fiction, science fiction, science fiction and fantasy Science Fiction & Fantasy, Baen
