Photos, Art, Drawings, Documents, Maps, [ED: 1st, Hard Cover, [PU: Reed, NF in NF jacket 25cm By 19cm. This "lllustrated History" follows the development of New Zealand's naval associations from the charting of the coast and explorations of Captain James Cook RN from 1769 and the appointment of New Zealand's first Governor, Captain William Hobson RN, in 1840, to the part played by the Royal Navy in the land wars of the 1860s from its base in Syndey, Australia. It was not until just before the outbreak of WWI that a NZ Naval Force, based on the small cruiser HMS Philomel, was established. That conflict resulted in the Admiralty taking over all naval operations. One battle cruiser, HMS New Zealand, paid for by that country, served with the Royal Navy throughout WWI, as did many NZ men. Following victory in 1918 it was time to start again and in 1921 a New Zealand Squadron of the Royal Navy was formed. The first major unit was the cruiser HMS Chatham, later replaced by two other cruisers, HMS Dunedin and Diomede, and these by HMS Achillies and Leander in the mid-1930s The former of these two ship distinguished herself in the first major naval engagment of WWII, the Battle of the River Plate. New Zealand ships and men served in both the European and Pacfic theatres, with the Royal New Zealand Navy being officially established late in 1941. The post war years for the RNZN are covered with equal detail and accuracy, including several subsequent regional conflicts, peace keeping, search and rescue and the Women's Royal New Zealand Naval Service (WRNZNS). Another interesting chapter examines the activities of German raiders in southern waters in the two world wars. Grant Howard, a RNZN and Defence Department public relations officer, served the navy well with this fine record. First edition of 1981, 170 pages including index, illustrated throughout with b/w photos, art, drawings, maps and documents. Dark blue hard covers with gilt spine titles NF, ditto text block, no inscriptions. Unclipped, wrap-round colour pictorial DJ also NF., Auckland, This "lllustrated History" follows the development of New Zealand's naval associations from the charting of the coast and explorations of Captain James Cook RN from 1769 and the appointment of New Zealand's first Governor, Captain William Hobson RN, in 1840, to the part played by the Royal Navy in the land wars of the 1860s from its base in Syndey, Australia.
