Seventy Light Years - hardcover

1998, ISBN: 0571197930

[SR: 759415], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780571197934], Faber and Faber, Faber and Faber, Book, [PU: Faber and Faber], Faber and Faber, This gentle account of a life in film is almost too modest to be entirely accurate. Freddie Young, who died in 1998, was one of the most impressive of film cameramen, perhaps best remembered for his work with director David Lean, but a veteran who started out with Hitchcock in the early days of talkies and worked with Michael Powell and George Cukor. The memoir of British film- making in his youth is perhaps the high point of the book--as a young man, Young was so keen to work in film that he put up with bad conditions and no pay, but was clearly as happy as he had ever been. He is good on Hollywood and the occasional idiocies of the studio system and entertaining about characters as different as Ingrid Bergman and Vincente Minnelli. If the book has a fault it is that he avoids the technical shop necessary to describe just how much of an innovator he always was, in favour of charming chat about personalities; it is perhaps only when he talks about the Lean films and just how he got, say, the look of Omar Sharif as Zhivago back from the Civil War, that he really talks himself up enough.--Roz Kaveney, 696229031, Books Trade-In, 401422011, Regular Stores, 405736, Special Features, 266239, Books, 124573031, General AAS, 91, Art, Architecture & Photography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 124650031, General AAS, 268003, Film, Television & Music, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 268020, General, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 124646031, General AAS, 67, Biography, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 270447, Criticism & Theory, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 270439, Cinematography, 512984, Production & Technology, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 270440, Direction & Production, 512984, Production & Technology, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 125121031, General AAS, 270433, Film, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 400530011, English, 400529011, Language (feature_browse-bin), 365481011, Refinements, 266239, Books, 492563011, Hardcover, 492562011, Format (binding_browse-bin), 365481011, Refinements, 266239, Books, 182018031, Regular Size, 182016031, Font Size (format_browse-bin), 365481011, Refinements, 266239, Books

Young, Freddie:

Seventy Light Years: A Life in the Movies - new book

ISBN: 9780571197934

In this witty and informative autobiography, written just before he died at the age of ninety-six, the British cinematographer Freddie Young takes us on a journey through the history of cinema, from his early days processing celluloid by hand for silent movies in Shepherd's Bush, London, to his adventures with David Lean in far-flung locations all over the world white firming Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, films for which Young received Academy Awards. Both entertaining and enlightening, Young includes anecdotes about the directors and stars he worked with -- from George Cukor and Vincente Minnelli to Ava Gardner and Elizabeth Taylor -- as well as offering an invaluable guide to how cinematography evolved from a craft into an art, providing information on how to set up shots, and explaining how a director's vision can best be fulfilled. Seventy Light Years is a book filled with one man's love for and knowledge of film -- a delight for film buffs and an education in itself for film students.
