Otherwise a good and clean copy. - Theologians have disagreed in their assessments of the Sermon on the Mount. In this book, first published in 1964 and issued as a paperback in 1976, Professor Davies's purpose is to place the Sermon in its historical setting and study it in the context of the world from which it originated. He first examines the world of Matthew and the ' Church ' to which he belonged, and then turns to the context of Messianic expectation to consider the relationship of the Sermon to the hopes of Judaism for a future Messianic teacher or lawgiver. The prominence which Matthew gave to the Sermon is examined in the light of forces, such as Gnosticism and the Dead Sea Sect, which were at work outside the Church at that time. Professor Davies then goes on to discuss the relation of the Sermon to certain movements or elements within the primitive Church: Paulinism, Q, M and the Johannine currents. Finally, he considers how far the Sermon represents the actual teaching of Jesus. This approach to the Sermon on the Mount is a new one, and Professor Davies presents much fresh material. His use of early Judaism in interpreting the Sermon has important implications in the relationship of Law and Gospel. His assessment of Law in primitive Christianity is particularly interesting in view of the rapprochement between Catholicism and Protestantism.CONTENT: I Introductory II The Setting in Matthew Pentateuchal motifs New Exodus and New Moses (a) The treatment of Mark and Q (¿) Material peculiar to Matthew (c) Miracles Mosaic categories transcended (a) The Christian life (¿) Terminology III The Setting in Jewish Messianic Expectation The Old Testament The Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha and Dead Sea Scrolls The Rabbinical sources TV The Setting in the Contemporary Judaism Gnosticism The Dead Sea Sect Jamnia 'File Setting in the Early Church Anti-Paulinism Paul and Tradition Q and Crisis; Catechesis; the Pastorals M and Gemara The Epistle of James and the Johannine Sources The Setting in the Ministry of Jesus Transmission of his words The Teacher The Eschatological Preacher The Rabbi The demand of Jesus in its setting Conclusion APPENDICES I Mekilta on Exod. xiv. 13-15 Mekilta on Exod. xv. 1-2 The Character of Matt, i and ii Isa. xli. 2 and the Pre-existent Messiah Cesará la Tora en la Edad Messiánica?'
