Lorenz Publishing Co. 1938an Anthema choral fantasia on "Crusaders Hymn"Four part mixed voices (S. A. T. B.)Paperback7 x 10 1/2 inches, 4 pages#: L-XLV / 9199with lyrics"Fairest Lord Jesus", also known as "Beautiful Savior", is a Christian hymn.According to some accounts, it was called "Crusader's Hymn" because it was sung by German Crusaders as they made their way to the Holy Land. But William Jensen Reynolds dismisses as "completely erroneous" any association of this hymn with the Crusades. The words may have originated in the Jesuit Order, which came into being after the Crusades. The tune emerges in Franz Liszt's oratorio Legend of Saint Elizabethwherein the tune forms part of the "Crusader's March"but no evidence of the tune exists prior to 1842, when the hymn appeared in Schlesische Volkslieder. The tune, originally a Silesian folk song, and the German text were printed for the first time in 1842 by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben and Ernst Richter under the name Schönster Herr Jesu (Most beautiful Lord Jesus). In 1850 the Danish hymnwriter B. S. Ingemann wrote Dejlig Er Jorden, which he set to the same melody. An English translation by Jens C. Aaberg was published as Fair Is Creation. Apart from their musical setting, the Danish and German lyrics are unrelated.------------------------------Ellen Jane Lorenz Porter (1907-1996) was born in 1907. Her grandfather, E.S. Lorenz founded the Lorenz Music Publishing Company in Dayton, Ohio in 1890. The company, which publishes church music, is still in operation today. Ellen Jane attended Wellesley College and majored in music. She then began teaching music in Akron, Ohio. Next she went to Paris to study musical composition under the famed teacher, Nadia Boulanger. Finally, in 1932, Ellen Jane returned to Dayton and began work as a cub editor at the Lorenz Music Publishing Company. She also began writing many original musical compositions that were published by the Lorenz Company. She wrote under the names Ellen Jane Lorenz, Allen James, and Rosemary Hadler. She became Editor in Chief in 1940 and remained in that position until her retirement in 1963. She then went back to college and earned her Master's degree, writing her thesis on the E.S. Lorenz collection of hymnals. At age 71, she earned her Ph.D. with a dissertation on camp meeting spirituals. Following that she taught Sacred Music at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio and summer courses in Hymnology and Handbell Ringing at Seattle Pacific University. Ellen Jane was a respected authority on handbells. Her hobby in later life was creative writing and she wrote many essays, poetry, and plays and socialized with other like-minded individuals in the Women's Literary Club of Dayton. Ellen Jane Lorenz Porter died in 1996., Lorenz Publishing Co., 1938, 292pp. Ramsey Campbell, the highly regarded British horror author called him, "the greatest living writer of supernatural horror fiction". Drawing many of his own themes from Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe, and H.P Lovecraft, master manipulator Franz Leiber is a worldwide legend within the Fantasy genre, actually coining the term "Sword and Sorcery" that would describe the sub-genre he would more than help create. While Lord of the Rings took the world by storm, Leiber's fantastic but thoroughly flawed anti-heroes, Fafhrd and Grey Mouser, adventured and stumbled deep within the caves of Inner Earth as well, albeit a different one. They wondered and wandered to the edges of the Outer Sea, across the Land of Nehwon and throughout every nook and cranny of gothic Lankhmar, Nehwon's grandest and most mystically corrupt city. Lankhmar, is Leiber's fully realized, vivid, incarnation of urban decay and civilization's corroding effect on the human psyche. Fafhrd and Mouse are not innocents; their world is no land of honor and righteousness. It is a world of human complexities and violent action, of discovery and mystery, of swords and sorcery. "Fritz Leiber's tales of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser are virtually a genre unto themselves. Urbane, idiosyncratic, comic, erotic and human, spiked with believable action of a master fantasist!" William Gibson "After too long a wait, the master story teller of us all returns with a huge, anecdotal adventure in the magic-drenched lives of Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. Glowing imagination melds with gorgeous language to make this one of Leiber's very best...which is a better best than this poor world usually has to offer. Keywords: Fantasy First printing.
