Making Popular Music: Musicians, Creativity and Institutions: Musician, Aesthetics and the Manufacture of Popular Music - Paperback

2000, ISBN: 0340652233

[SR: 188591], Paperback, [EAN: 9780340652237], Bloomsbury Academic, Bloomsbury Academic, Book, [PU: Bloomsbury Academic], 2000-04-28, Bloomsbury Academic, *Nominated for the International Association for the Study of Popular Music Book Prize* Partly because they are the objects of such intense adulation by fans popular musicians remain strangely enigmatic figures, shrouded in mythology. This book looks beyond the myth and examines the diverse roles music makers have had to adopt in order to go about their work: designer, ventriloquist, star, delegate of the people. The musician is a divided subject and jack of all trades However the story does not end here. Arguing against that strand in cultural studies which deconstructs all claims for authorship by the individual artist, Jason Toynbee suggests that creativity should be reconceived rather than abandoned. He argues that what is needed is a sense of 'the radius of creativity' within which musicians work, an approach that takes into account both the embedded collectivism of popular music practice and the institutional power of the music industries. Drawing on a wide range of theoretical positions, as well as examining musical texts from across the history of twentieth-century pop, this groundbreaking book develops a powerful case for the importance of production in contemporary culture. Students of cultural and media studies, music and the performing arts will find this book an invaluable resource., 68, Business, Finance & Law, 268091, Accounting, 659886, Biographies & Histories, 276808, Careers, 404214, E-Commerce, 268153, Economics, 275945, Law, 268290, Management, 268203, Personal Finance, 268179, Professional Finance, 659890, Reference & Education, 268314, Sales & Marketing, 268144, Small Business & Entrepreneurship, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 271343, Great Britain, 12447586031, 20th Century, 12447587031, 21st Century, 271352, Anglo-Saxon, 772172, Crimean War, 271353, Early British & Roman Britain, 12447590031, England, 771740, English Civil War, 771748, Falklands War, 271346, Georgian & Regency Britain, 771746, Industrial Revolution, 4117751, Scotland, 271345, Stuart Britain, 771734, The Norman Conquest & Norman Britain, 271344, The Plantaganets & Medieval England, 4117761, Wales, 771738, Wars of the Roses, 271480, Europe, 65, History, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 267335, Styles, 512268, Rock & Pop, 267324, Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 516732, Composers & Musicians, 516734, Classical Music, 516736, Rock & Other Styles, 267294, Music, 73, Music, Stage & Screen, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 276413, Social & Cultural, 276412, Anthropology, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books, 496718, Media & Communication Industries, 270447, Film, 496724, Press & Journalism, 496720, Radio, 496722, Television, 275700, Communication Studies, 276411, Social Sciences, 60, Society, Politics & Philosophy, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books

Details of the book
Making Popular Music: Musicians, Creativity and Institutions

This is a highly original and compelling exploration of how popular music is made. The role of the musician is often camouflaged by commercial and marketing pressures and by the common assumption that the music simply reflects the musician's personality. Drawing on a wide range of ides from modern cultural studies, and examining musical texts from across the twentieth century, Jason Toynbee provides a lively reevaluation of what musicians actually do when they create popular songs.
