In Fred Archer's grandfather's day, in the long reign of Queen Victoria, corn was reaped in August by hook and by crook - just one stage in the unending cycle of tying and stooking, and gleaning and stone-clearing, harrowing and planting. But there was time too for William Archer to become shin-kicking champion at the Bredon Games, and for a travelling Russian and his dancing bear to give some pig thieves an almighty fright in the night. As well as stories of his grandfather, Fred Archer remembers his Uncle Jim, the old Ashton Squires, and the hunting parson; and villagers like Jim Dance, the Squire's groom with his ready remedies for the fluke and the husk in sheep and cattle, or Fred Dunn with his loving attention to the Squire's great plough horses. In the course of a century change inevitably came to the Vale of Evesham: the early horse-driven threshing machines provoked a riot; the steam plough which came later required small boys with oily rags to keep it gleaming. Communications, too, improved. At the beginning of the century the roads were made good and rolled with a perry pear-wood roller cut from David Drinkwater's orchard; while in the sixties railway speculators brought a loop line through Ashton which, in turn, set Ashton folk travelling. William Archer continued to take his pearmains and pippins to Evesham Market by donkey cart, but his daughter Phoebe went into service in Cheltenham.
