The Great Household in Late Medieval England - hardcover

ISBN: 0300076878

[SR: 487382], Hardcover, [EAN: 9780300076875], Yale University Press, Yale University Press, Book, [PU: Yale University Press], Yale University Press, Based on household accounts, and other related documents, Woolgar sheds light on life in some of the great English medieval houses (1200-1500). He examines routines, weekly and annual patterns of activites, observances of births, childhood, marraiges, death and burial; from the mundane and routine (preparation and serving of meals, servant duties, furnishings, hygiene) to entertainment, travel, religious and intellectual life. A comprehensive, illustrated survey of life in a medieval house., Outside the present-day royal households, little remains in Britain that can compare with the "great household." A gradually dying entity since the early 20th century, the great household included family, servants, and hangers-on, and provided more than merely food and shelter for its members. As C.M. Woolgar argues in his book The Great Household in Late Medieval England, the great household functioned as a social microcosm and, consequently, day-to-day life in and around the household provides valuable insight into the period's social history. The Great Household examines the basic characteristics of both aristocratic and gentry households between 1200 and 1500: size, membership, dynamics, economics, and social context. Woolgar bases his study on the households of two aristocrats, two gentry families, and two bishops. Together, they provide examples of a style of living at different ranks of upper-class society and a geographical spread across the country. Eight chapters focus on various elements of medieval life, including food and drink, rituals of preparing and consuming meals, religion and intellectual life, household size, and concepts of hospitality. He supplements his study with tables, period illustrations and illuminations, and contemporary photographs. An archivist and head of special collections at the University of Southampton, Woolgar enthusiastically embraces his subject matter and knows it well. Frequently, however, his passion for detail obfuscates critical analysis and broader contrast of medieval households with each other or with those of other periods. Nevertheless, The Great Household in Late Medieval England paints a fascinating portrait of upper-class medieval life. --Bertina Loeffler Sedlack, 10166928011, Mid-Life, 4736, Self-Help, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 4948, England, 9332123011, Great Britain, 4935, Europe, 9, History, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 5373, Home Repair, 5339, How-to & Home Improvements, 6158312011, Home Improvement & Design, 48, Crafts, Hobbies & Home, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 20, Parenting & Relationships, 11350, Adoption, 11352, Aging Parents, 10166921011, Babysitting, Day Care & Child Care, 11365, Family Activities, 11367, Family Health, 11370, Family Relationships, 68181, Fertility, 761128, Humor, 4734, Marriage & Adult Relationships, 11401, Parenting, 4676, Pregnancy & Childbirth, 11434, Reference, 11436, Special Needs, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11244, Customs & Traditions, 11232, Social Sciences, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books, 11235, Cultural, 11233, Anthropology, 3377866011, Politics & Social Sciences, 1000, Subjects, 283155, Books
