Office report (HCP 1332, session 2002-03; ISBN 0102923744), the Committee's report examines how the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and Ofsted measures and reports the performance of maintained secondary schools in England, as well as ways of enhancing the effectiveness of secondary schools in improving the academic achievements of their pupils. It highlights the importance of measuring and analysing external influences on pupil performance, and making this adjusted performance data available to parents, in order to give a more robust and objective indication of the quality of education offered by different schools. Such data should take into account broader indicators of social and economic deprivation, to include those families in receipt of Income Support, as well as established measures such as eligibility for free school meals. Other conclusions drawn include that: Ofsted should set out in its inspection reports where a school ranks in terms of academic achievement before and after taking account of the influence of external factors; and adjusted performance measures show that specialist, faith, beacon and single sex schools do better than average.
