Will Christopher Baer:
Kiss ME, Judas - Paperback

2000, ISBN: 0140292241

[SR: 4729326], Paperback, [EAN: 9780140292244], Penguin Books Ltd, Penguin Books Ltd, Book, [PU: Penguin Books Ltd], 2000-04-27, Penguin Books Ltd, Illegal organ appropriation has become a standard theme of the thriller (Robin Cook's Coma being the most successful example of the genre). Baer has something new to bring to the theme, however. For a start, the first-person narrative here has a brilliantly sharp and witty edge, with the black humour cunningly offsetting the grisly business of kidney theft. Starting as a salutary reminder that casual sexual encounters can have highly dangerous consequences, Baer has ex-cop Phineas Poe (shame about the name, but it's Baer's only miscalculation) becoming an unwilling kidney donor--as well as a murder suspect--after a $200 tryst with a woman who had designs on more than one of his organs. The fact that Poe is in love with the woman who left him in a bath full of ice with staples in his side makes this more than just a thriller: we're in the kind of crazed love story territory of writers like Barry Gifford, and Baer has the same outrageous gifts. There's also a strange but convincing literary structure to the book, with its short, punchy paragraphs and disturbingly distorted time sense creating a bizarre stop-start effect that nevertheless ensures the reader's total attention. --Barry Forshaw, 62, Fiction, 275035, Adventure Stories & Action, 275116, Anthologies, 426316031, Biographical Fiction, 590912, Classics, 590756, Contemporary Fiction, 72, Crime, Thrillers & Mystery, 275040, Erotica, 275050, Family Sagas, 279254, Fantasy, 598310, Film & Television Tie-In, 590800, Gay & Lesbian, 10790401, Historical, 63, Horror, 426359031, Humour, 590930, Lad Lit, 590934, Literary Fiction, 426309031, Medical, 590794, Metaphysical & Visionary, 275053, Myths & Fairy Tales, 426362031, Poetry & Drama, 590796, Political, 426310031, Psychological, 275054, Religious & Inspirational, 88, Romance, 279292, Science Fiction, 275380, Short Stories, 590792, Sport, 275060, War, 275065, Westerns, 590760, Women Writers & Fiction, 1025612, Subjects, 266239, Books
