London: Printed for W. Strahan [& 3 others],, 1770. A bright set in a contemporary binding First edition of the great agricultural reformer's survey of the northern counties of England. Young's Tours are "his most valuable publications", and the English Tours in particular contain "the best account of the state of the country, and the condition of the agriculturists, between 1760 and 1780" (McCulloch, p. 214). England "with its increased acreage of cultivated land resulting from the enclosure system, and the consequent rise of great landowners and farmers in the eighteenth century, especially welcomed innovations in agricultural methods. Arthur Young applied statistical methods to the study of agriculture, investigating both the statistics of production and the costs of this particular industry. He obtained his information from a series of extensive tours in England, Ireland and France, where he studied the state of agriculture at first hand. These journeys resulted in the publication of about two hundred and fifty books and pamphlets setting out his ideas and theories" (PMM). 4 volumes, octavo (201 x 123 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco labels, compartments and boards ruled in gilt, raised bands, edges sprinkled red. 28 engraved plates (many folding) and 6 folding tables. Extremities rubbed, spine ends a little bumped with a few splits to joints, endpapers browned from turn-ins, hinges gently cracked but firm, contents very lightly tanned with occasional spotting, overall a bright set in very good condition.
