Affecting all of us in a variety of ways, it was imperative that the Jan van Eyck Akademie dedicate part of its experimentally creative research programme to a deeper investigation and re-assessment. Over the past three years, under the careful guidance of Jean Fisher, internationally known for her artistic and scholarly reflections on this complex subject, a unique symposium, Reverberations, was organised. The variety of speakers, coupled with their intensity, vitality and humour, brought a fresh perspective to the subject. The symposium attracted an exceptionally large community of artists, philosophers, political activists, designers, technicians, workers — and it did so in a way that allowed for that rare mixture of curiosity, commitment and play to be considered and expressed on such a crucial area. This book, which emerged from such a unique moment of conversation and exchange, captures in large part this rare mixture. We are particularly grateful to its designer, Mart Rozenbeek, and to its production co-ordinator, Paul Domela Nieuwenhuis, for their insight and ability to 'translate' the content into such an accessible and tangible reflection of that day. We would like to acknowledge with great appreciation and admiration, the work of Jean Fisher and Paul Domela Nieuwenhuis for their excellent organisation of the symposium itself. We would also like to thank Jo Frenken, Els Kuijpers and Sue Golding [johnny de philo] for their share in the co-ordination and production of this book, and to the technical, administrative, and domestic staff for making this book into a reality.
