Bridal-Quest Romance in Medieval Iceland treats a little-known group of sagas and a subgenre of Icelandic romance. Marianne E. Kalinke provides the first overview and analysis of this popular thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Icelandic form, examining works of two saga types that have previously been considered distinct genres. Focusing on the often complex character of the hero and the nature of his quest, Professor Kalinke discusses twenty bridal-quest romances exemplifying both the fornaldarsogur (heroic sagas) and riddarasogur (chivalric sagas). She discovers that the bridal quest functions not as a motif in the sagas, but rather as the determinant of plot, the catalyst that generates the hero's actions. The obstacles standing between the hero and his goal may be manifold in an individual saga: the sought-after bride, her relatives, or one or more rival suitors may create impediments; or the hero himself may obstruct his quest by virtue of his inferior social standing, personality, or unethical behavior. Professor Kalinke devotes particular attention to a type of bridal-quest romance peculiar to Iceland, the maiden-king romance, which involves a female ruler and her struggle to assert her independence. The author concludes that Icelandic romance represents two narrative possibilities - one conservative and reflecting the development of narrative on the continent, the other more advanced than the continental romance of that time. Variations of a fixed narrative paradigm characterize the first type, which includes the maiden-king romances, in which the predictable plot generates a hero whose actions consist in reacting to a woman who refuses all suitors. In the second, most common type, the plot is determined not by an established paradigm but rather by a flaw or particular trait of the hero's character. The book acquaints an English-speaking audience with many as yet untranslated sagas.
