SUB-TITLE: Memoirs. SYNOPSIS: He edited the Sunday Express for a record-breaking three decades. He has met and influenced nearly every major figure in public life--from Her Majesty the Queen to the Princess of Wales, from Harold Macmillan to Margaret Thatcher. Sir John Junor is a Fleet Street legend. Listening for a Midnight Tram is the long-awaited story of his life--as uncompromising and controversial as the man himself. John Junor was born in Shannon Street, Glasgow, in 1919. Before the war he read English at Glasgow University, where he was also President of the University Liberal Club. During the war he served first in armed merchant cruisers in the Royal Navy and then as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, founding and editing the Air Arm's magazine Flight Deck. In 1947 he joined Beaverbrook Newspapers, rising to become the Assistant Editor of the Daily Express from 1951 to 1953, the Deputy Editor of the Evening Standard from 1953 to 1954 and the Editor of the Sunday Express from 1954 to 1986, a Fleet Street record. In 1989 he joined Associated Newspapers where he now writes a hugely popular column for the Mail on Sunday. John Junor has one son, Roderick, and a daughter, Penny who are both journalists. He was knighted in 1980., London, [PU: Pan Books Ltd]<
