When Timothy the Tortoise died in April 2004 at more than 160,he was Britain's oldest living resident. For more than a century he belonged to the Courtenay family,Earls of Devon, living in the Rose Garden at Powderham Castle, which has been their home for 600 years.Timothy,a Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise, survived six monarchs, two world wars, and the frozen winters of 1947 and 1963.He hibernated under a giant purple wisteria and never came indoors. His diet was dandelions, lettuce and strawberries. His early life was spent as a ship's mascot before entering the family, fully grown,at fifty. But had he really been at the first bombardment of Sebastopol aboard the HMS Queen? Did he jump ship on hearing the next voyage was to Antarctica? In 1926,he endured the discovery that he was a she,and never mated. This is the story of his life, waking and sleeping. It is also the story of an estate and a family to whom he was a much-loved friend. It is their evolution and longevity,as much as his.'Where have I fallen, what have I done?' is the Courtenay family motto. In Timothy's case,it was into very good hands and really quite a lot. When the author's father took him to Powderham, just aged four,he wandered out into the Rose garden and met Timothy. It was a meeting he never forgot. In 1998,he returned to undertake the only interview Timothy ever gave, and was allowed to pick him up.When Timothy died, the family asked him to break the news, which then appeared on television, radio and in newspapers all over the world. The author is a writer and journalist living on his family farm near Exeter, Devon. He writes for many publications, including the 'Daily Telegraph','Country Life' and 'Horse & Hound'.
